AutoCodesToyota – P011B 2014 Toyota RAV4

P011B 2014 Toyota RAV4 Code - Engine Coolant Temperature/Intake Air Temperature Correlation

Quick Answer

The engine has two temperature sensors, an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, to detect the temperature while the engine is in operation. Common causes include Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, Engine Coolant Temperature sensor harness is open or shorted, Engine Coolant Temperature sensor circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P011B 2014 Toyota RAV4 Description

The engine has two temperature sensors, an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, to detect the temperature while the engine is in operation. A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the temperature, is built into each sensor. When the temperature is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the Engine Control Module (ECM) as voltage changes. Based on these temperature signals output from the sensors, the ECM determines the fuel injection time and the ignition timing to control the engine.
The ECM monitors the difference between the engine coolant temperature and the intake air temperature when the engine is started cold to accurately detect the engine temperature conditions. The monitor runs when the engine is started after 7 hours or more have elapsed since the engine was stopped (ignition switch turned off) on the previous trip. If the difference between the engine coolant temperature and the intake air temperature on a cold start exceeds 25°C (45°F), the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit and intake air temperature sensor circuit and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Frequently Asked Questions about P011B 2014 Toyota RAV4 Code

1. What does OBDII code P011B mean on a 2014 Toyota RAV4?

P011B indicates a correlation issue between the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, meaning their readings are inconsistent.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P011B in a 2014 Toyota RAV4?

Common symptoms include poor engine performance, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, or the Check Engine Light turning on.

3. What causes the P011B code to appear in a Toyota RAV4?

Potential causes include a faulty ECT sensor, IAT sensor, wiring issues, corroded electrical connections, or a problem with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Can a dirty air filter trigger code P011B in a 2014 RAV4?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter could indirectly affect intake air temperature readings, contributing to the issue.

5. How do you diagnose a P011B code in a Toyota RAV4?

Diagnosis involves using an OBDII scanner, inspecting the ECT and IAT sensors, checking for damaged wiring, and comparing temperature readings for correlation.

6. Can I drive my 2014 Toyota RAV4 with a P011B code?

Driving with a P011B code is possible, but it’s not recommended as it can lead to poor performance and increased emissions.

7. How do you fix a P011B code in a Toyota RAV4?

Repairs may include replacing the ECT or IAT sensor, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning electrical connections, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P011B code on a 2014 Toyota RAV4?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $50 to $300, depending on whether you need to replace a sensor or address wiring issues.

9. Can extreme weather conditions cause a P011B code in a Toyota RAV4?

Extreme temperatures can sometimes affect sensor readings, but persistent issues usually indicate a sensor or wiring fault.

10. Do I need to reset the ECM after fixing a P011B code on my RAV4?

Yes, after completing repairs, use an OBDII scanner to clear the code and verify that the issue is resolved.
