The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the values with other inputs (coolant temperature, throttle plate position, etc). If the frequency from the MAF is lower or higher than the expected, then the PCM will set the P0102 code.
Either the MAF is bad or the wires from the MAF to the PCM are not making good contact.
