When the engine control module deactivates the exhaust gas recirculation valve an increase in mass airflow sensor voltage is expected. If this voltage increase does not occur, then a fault code for exhaust gas recirculation - excessive flow detected is stored in the engine control module. Currently, modern vehicles can have an analog output or a digital output from the mass airflow sensor. An oscilloscope can be used to test the signal. A sensor with an analog output will have a voltage that increases with airflow volume. A sensor with a digital output will have a frequency that varies with airflow volume.
