This fault code is stored in the engine control module when the output from the mass airflow sensor is not as expected. The mass airflow sensor is used to measure the volume of airflow entering the engine and is located downstream of the air filter. The density of the incoming air can also be measured. Cold air is denser than warm air and has more oxygen present so the engine fueling can be adjusted accordingly. The exhaust gas recirculation system can be monitored using the mass airflow sensor output. If a large volume of exhaust gases is re-circulated, then a reduction in incoming air will take place. When the engine control module activates the exhaust gas recirculation valve a reduction in mass airflow sensor voltage is expected. If this voltage reduction does not occur, then a fault code for exhaust gas recirculation - insufficient flow detected is stored in the engine control module. When the engine control module deactivates the exhaust gas recirculation valve an increase in mass airflow sensor voltage is expected. If this voltage increase does not occur, then a fault code for exhaust gas recirculation - excessive flow detected is stored in the engine control module. Currently, modern vehicles can have an analog output or a digital output from the mass airflow sensor. An oscilloscope can be used to test the signal. A sensor with an analog output will have a voltage that increases with airflow volume. A sensor with a digital output will have a frequency which varies with airflow volume.
