Code P0060 Saturn Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects the HO2S heater is not within a specified resistance range at engine start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0060 Saturn Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0060 mean on a Saturn?

P0060 indicates a problem with the heater resistance in the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) for Bank 2 Sensor 2, which is located downstream of the catalytic converter.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0060 on a Saturn?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, increased fuel consumption, poor engine performance, or difficulty passing an emissions test.

3. What causes the P0060 code to appear on a Saturn?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a blown fuse, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

4. Can I drive my Saturn with a P0060 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential long-term damage to the catalytic converter if not addressed promptly.

5. How do I diagnose the P0060 code on my Saturn?

Diagnosis involves inspecting the oxygen sensor wiring and connectors, testing the heater circuit's resistance with a multimeter, and checking for blown fuses related to the sensor.

6. How do I fix the P0060 code on a Saturn?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, checking and replacing fuses, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0060 code on a Saturn?

Replacing an oxygen sensor typically costs $150–$400, including parts and labor, depending on your vehicle model and repair shop.

8. How can I prevent the P0060 code from recurring on my Saturn?

Regular maintenance, inspecting and cleaning sensor wiring, and promptly addressing check engine light issues can help prevent recurrence.

9. Can a bad catalytic converter cause the P0060 code on a Saturn?

While a bad catalytic converter is not a direct cause, it may lead to oxygen sensor issues that could trigger the P0060 code.

10. Do I need to replace all oxygen sensors if I get a P0060 code on my Saturn?

No, you only need to replace the faulty sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2) unless other sensors show signs of failure or are near the end of their lifespan.
