Code P0059 2017 GMC Sierra Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects the HO2S heater is not within a specified resistance range at engine start-up.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0059 2017 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P0059 mean on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

P0059 indicates an issue with the heater circuit resistance in the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) for Bank 2 Sensor 1, typically related to improper function or resistance outside the expected range.

What are the symptoms of P0059 on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms can include a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, rough idling, or poor engine performance.

What causes the P0059 code to appear on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, a failed HO2S heater circuit, or an issue with the powertrain control module (PCM).

How do I diagnose the P0059 code on my 2017 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis involves using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, visually inspecting the oxygen sensor and wiring, and testing the resistance of the sensor's heater circuit with a multimeter.

Can I drive my 2017 GMC Sierra with the P0059 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, ignoring the code can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and potential damage to other engine components over time.

How do I fix the P0059 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, or addressing issues with the PCM if necessary.

How much does it cost to fix the P0059 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?

Costs vary, but replacing the oxygen sensor typically ranges from $150 to $300, including parts and labor. Wiring repairs or PCM replacement may increase costs.

Is the P0059 code specific to the 2017 GMC Sierra?

No, P0059 is a generic OBDII code that can appear on various vehicles, but its symptoms and causes may vary depending on the make and model.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P0059 code on a 2017 GMC Sierra?
