Code P0057 2018 GMC Sierra Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects a short to ground in the heater output low side driver circuit of the heated oxygen sensor when the heater is commanded OFF for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0057 2018 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0057 mean on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

P0057 indicates a problem with the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) Heater Control Circuit Low Voltage for Bank 2 Sensor 2, meaning the heater circuit is not functioning correctly.

2. What are the symptoms of P0057 on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, and possible difficulty passing emissions tests.

3. What causes the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a blown fuse, or a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Which oxygen sensor does P0057 refer to on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

P0057 refers to the downstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 2) on Bank 2, which is the side of the engine opposite the number one cylinder.

5. Can I drive my 2018 GMC Sierra with the P0057 code?

Driving with the P0057 code is possible but not recommended, as it may lead to reduced performance, poor fuel economy, and potential damage to the catalytic converter over time.

6. How do I diagnose the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage, checking the oxygen sensor heater resistance with a multimeter, and verifying proper voltage supply to the heater circuit.

7. How do I fix the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing damaged wiring, replacing a blown fuse, or reprogramming/updating the PCM if needed.

8. How much does it cost to repair the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $300, depending on whether you replace the oxygen sensor or repair wiring issues. Labor rates and diagnostic fees may vary.

9. Can a bad fuse trigger the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a blown fuse in the oxygen sensor heater circuit can cause insufficient voltage and trigger the P0057 code.

10. What tools are needed to diagnose the P0057 code on a 2018 GMC Sierra?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter, and possibly a wiring diagram to check for voltage, resistance, or continuity in the heater circuit.
