Code P0036 2018 Chevrolet Silverado Description

Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) are used for fuel control and post catalyst monitoring. Each HO2S compares the oxygen content of the surrounding air with the oxygen content in the exhaust stream. The HO2S must reach an operating temperature to provide an accurate voltage signal. A heating element inside the HO2S minimizes the time required for the sensors to reach operating temperature. Voltage is provided to the heater by an ignition voltage circuit through a fuse. With the engine running, the ground is provided to the heater by the HO2S heater low control circuit through a low side driver within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the HO2S heater operation to maintain a specific HO2S operating temperature range.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects an open circuit in the heater output low side driver circuit of the heated oxygen sensor when the heater is commanded OFF for greater than 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0036 2018 Chevrolet Silverado Code

What does the P0036 code mean for a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

The P0036 code indicates an issue with the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) Heater Control Circuit for Bank 1 Sensor 2, which monitors the oxygen levels in the exhaust after the catalytic converter.

What are the symptoms of the P0036 code on a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential difficulty passing emissions tests, though drivability is often unaffected.

What causes the P0036 code to appear?

Possible causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the heater circuit, a blown fuse, or a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM).

How do I diagnose the P0036 code on my 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by inspecting the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, checking the oxygen sensor's resistance with a multimeter, and verifying the heater circuit's continuity.

Can I drive my 2018 Chevrolet Silverado with a P0036 code?

Driving with this code is generally safe, but it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and emissions issues. It's best to address the problem promptly to avoid long-term damage.

How do I fix the P0036 code on my 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common fixes include replacing the Bank 1 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, and checking the associated fuse and ECM functionality.

How much does it cost to repair a P0036 code?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $300, depending on whether the oxygen sensor or wiring needs repair or replacement.

What tools do I need to fix the P0036 code?

You'll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing electrical circuits, and basic hand tools to replace the oxygen sensor or repair wiring.

Does the P0036 code affect emissions testing?

Yes, a P0036 code can cause your vehicle to fail an emissions test because it impacts the oxygen sensor's ability to properly monitor exhaust gases.

What is Bank 1 Sensor 2 in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado?

Bank 1 Sensor 2 is the downstream oxygen sensor located after the catalytic converter on the side of the engine with cylinder 1. It monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter.
