Code P0024 Lincoln Description

The Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid valve is an integral part of the VCT system. The solenoid valve controls the flow of engine oil in the VCT actuator assembly. As the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the duty cycle of the solenoid valve, oil pressure/flow advances or retards the cam timing. Duty cycles near 0% or 100% represent the rapid movement of the camshaft. Retaining a fixed camshaft position is accomplished by dithering (oscillating) the solenoid valve duty cycle.
The PCM calculates and determines the desired camshaft position. It continually updates the VCT solenoid duty cycle until the desired position is achieved. A difference between the desired and actual camshaft position represents a position error in the PCM VCT control loop. The PCM disables the VCT and places the camshaft in a default position if a concern is detected. A related Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) also sets when the concern is detected.
When the VCT solenoid is energized, engine oil is allowed to flow to the VCT actuator assembly which advances or retards the camshaft timing. One half of the VCT actuator is coupled to the camshaft and the other half is connected to the timing chain. Oil chambers between the 2 halves couple the camshaft to the timing chain. When the flow of oil is shifted from one side of the chamber to the other, the differential change in oil pressure forces the camshaft to rotate in either an advance or retard position depending on the oil flow.
This DTC sets when the VCT position is over-advanced. This DTC sets when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in an advanced position.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0024 Lincoln Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0024 mean on a Lincoln?

P0024 indicates that the camshaft position timing for "B" camshaft on Bank 2 is over-advanced beyond the manufacturer’s specifications.

2. What are the symptoms of the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Symptoms may include rough idling, decreased fuel efficiency, engine stalling, poor acceleration, or the check engine light illuminating.

3. What causes the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Common causes include a faulty variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid, low or dirty engine oil, a malfunctioning camshaft position sensor, or timing chain issues.

4. Is it safe to drive with the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Driving with this code for an extended period is not recommended, as it could lead to engine performance issues and potential long-term damage.

5. How can I fix the P0024 code on my Lincoln?

Repairs may involve replacing the VVT solenoid, clearing any oil restrictions, changing the engine oil and filter, or addressing timing chain wear or misalignment.

6. How is the P0024 code diagnosed on a Lincoln?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to confirm the code, check live data for camshaft timing discrepancies, inspect the VVT system, and check the condition of the oil and timing components.

7. Can low engine oil cause the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Yes, low or dirty engine oil can affect the VVT system’s operation, leading to camshaft timing issues and triggering the P0024 code.

8. What does Bank 2 refer to in the P0024 code?

Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite Bank 1, typically the side without the first cylinder in V-shaped engines.

9. Can a bad camshaft position sensor trigger the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Yes, a faulty camshaft position sensor can provide incorrect timing data, causing the ECU to detect an over-advanced camshaft position.

10. What is the estimated repair cost for the P0024 code on a Lincoln?

Repair costs vary but may range from $150 to $500 depending on the specific issue, such as replacing a VVT solenoid or addressing timing chain problems.
