P0017 2016 Toyota RAV4 Code - Crankshaft Position Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor 'B'

Quick Answer

In the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). Common causes include Low or Dirty Engine Oil, Oil control valve filter, Faulty Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly (for exhaust camshaft). Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P0017 2016 Toyota RAV4 Description

In the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system, the appropriate intake and exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM performs intake and exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft. To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learned value while the engine is idling. The VVT learned value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The exhaust valve timing is set to the most advanced angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learned value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0017.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0017 2016 Toyota RAV4 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0017 mean for a 2016 Toyota RAV4?

P0017 indicates a misalignment between the crankshaft position and camshaft position for Bank 1 Sensor 'B', which can affect the engine’s timing.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P0017 code on a 2016 Toyota RAV4?

Symptoms may include rough idling, poor acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, engine misfires, and, in some cases, the engine failing to start.

3. What causes the P0017 code in a 2016 Toyota RAV4?

Common causes include a faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor, stretched timing chain, worn timing components, a malfunctioning variable valve timing (VVT) system, or contaminated engine oil.

4. Can dirty or old engine oil trigger the P0017 code?

Yes, dirty or degraded engine oil can cause issues with the VVT system, leading to the P0017 code being triggered.

5. How do you diagnose the P0017 code on a 2016 Toyota RAV4?

Diagnosis usually involves scanning for additional codes, inspecting the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, checking the timing chain for wear or stretching, and testing the VVT system components.

6. Is it safe to drive a 2016 Toyota RAV4 with a P0017 code?

Driving with a P0017 code is not recommended, as it can lead to more severe engine damage if the timing chain or other components fail.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P0017 code on a Toyota RAV4?

Repair costs vary, ranging from $150 for sensor replacements to over $1,000 for timing chain repairs, depending on the cause.

8. Can a faulty crankshaft position sensor cause the P0017 code?

Yes, a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor can disrupt the correlation between the crankshaft and camshaft, causing the code to appear.

9. How do you fix the P0017 code on a 2016 Toyota RAV4?

Fixing the issue may involve replacing faulty sensors, repairing the VVT system, adjusting the timing chain, or changing the engine oil if it’s degraded.

10. Can resetting the check engine light fix the P0017 code?

Resetting the check engine light will not fix the underlying issue. The code will likely reappear unless the root cause is addressed.
