Code P0011 KIA Description

The CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) system is installed to the chain sprocket of the exhaust camshaft. There is no variation in valve timing of the exhaust cam because the exhaust camshaft is driven by the timing belt. The timing of the intake cam is varied by the relative operation the CVVT vane to the housing. The CVVT controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the OCV (Oil Control Valve). As result, the relative position between the camshaft and the crankshaft becomes optimal, and the engine torque improves, fuel economy improves, exhaust emissions decrease by changing the valve open/close timing of the intake camshaft.

The deviation of the camshaft position from the target point is evaluated during stable driving condition. The Engine Control Module (ECM) accumulates this deviation for a certain period and sets DTC P0011 when the accumulated deviation is too high. The target camshaft position is predetermined value depending on engine speed and throttle angle in the ECM.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0011 KIA OBDII Code

  • need estimate to fix oo11 on 2007 Kia sportage.....intake camshaft position timing over advanced bank 1..................pawtucker ri

  • The estimate depends what the problem is. You may just need an oil change.

  • 99% of the time your oil is too thin to actuate the Timing Control.
Change to New Oil or add something thicker like Lucas, STP, etc.

  • Change the oil. I use straight 40 weight and bingo problem solved. It is because the Timing Actuator is a Hydraulic device which relies on Oil Pressure. If it is too thin it cannot pust the Actuator and will cause this code

  • P0011 - solution. I had a problem with my Kia Magentis (Lotze, Optima) 2.0i, 144hp, 2006. 2 years was ok, 3 or 4 oil changing, very good oil, Mobis oryginal oil filter and..... check engine lighting -code P0011 - it was irritating. I wanted to buy a new OCV valve, but earlier I try to see what is inside the valve (I have a second car:)). This OCV valve is not complicated inside. Firstly I unbend casing of coil and disassemble valve. Inside are two pistons (bigger one we can see without disassemble - it was not interested for me). Important for me was second smaller piston and the external stainless steel cylinder. Cylinder inside was not clear (dirty oil and some filings). I cleaned it and of course small piston - especially two small holes. Next I filled clean engine oil for this cylinder and putted piston. Then waited me the hardest thing - assembling. I used my vise, not too tightly squeezed valve and bended casing of coil using a hammer. Next I installed the valve and cleared OBD code. 30 minutes work, no cost and success - check engine not lighting (It was 2 months ago). Important - check your valve several times after engine start (I do it 10 and 200 km later) - my valve not leak but if you have possibility - change 2 rubber gasket o-ring before assembling. Good luck!

  • Does the car gets hot if I have a faulty p0011?

  • There is no relation between the engine temperature and the P0011 code

  • Is this fault code a powertrain issue? And if so, does it fall under Kia's powertrain warranty of 10 years or 100,000 miles?

    • Yes, the P0011 code is considered a powertrain issue—it’s related to the variable valve timing system, specifically the intake camshaft on Bank 1. It can be caused by a faulty VVT solenoid, camshaft actuator, timing chain stretch, or oil flow problems.

Now, whether it’s covered under Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty depends on a few things:

      • If you’re the original owner, then yes—this typically falls under powertrain coverage.
      • If you’re a second owner, the powertrain warranty usually drops to 5 years/60,000 miles.

Your best bet is to call the dealership with your VIN—they can tell you if you're still under warranty and whether this specific repair is covered. If it is, they should take care of it at no cost.
