DTC P0456 indicates that the EVAP system has detected a small leak. Small EVAP leaks can be difficult to find and are commonly caused by a loose or weak gas cap seal, small cracks in EVAP hoses, a leaking purge valve, a leaking vent valve, or minor leaks near the charcoal canister or fuel filler neck.

Work in a well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors are flammable. Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel or EVAP system.

Step 1

Inspect and Tighten the Gas Cap

Instruction Remove and inspect the gas cap. Check the seal for cracks, flattening, dirt, or damage. Reinstall and tighten it fully.

Expected result The gas cap should seal tightly and the rubber seal should be clean and flexible.

If Pass Continue to Step 2.

If Fail Replace the gas cap if the seal is damaged, weak, missing, or the cap does not tighten correctly.

Step 2

Check for Other EVAP Codes

Instruction Scan for additional EVAP codes related to the purge valve, vent valve, leak detection pump, or fuel tank pressure sensor.

Expected result No related circuit or sensor codes should be present.

If Pass Continue to Step 3.

If Fail Diagnose related EVAP component or circuit codes first because they can affect leak testing.

Step 3

Inspect EVAP Hoses and Filler Neck

Instruction Inspect visible EVAP hoses, the fuel filler neck, filler cap area, and vapor lines for small cracks, loose clamps, rust, or damage.

Expected result No cracks, loose connections, or rust holes should be found.

If Pass Continue to Step 4.

If Fail Repair or replace damaged hoses, clamps, or filler neck components. Clear codes and retest.

Step 4

Check the Purge Valve for Small Leakage

Instruction Test whether the purge valve seals when closed. If no scan tool is available, remove the valve and check whether air passes through when it should be closed.

Expected result The purge valve should seal completely when not commanded open.

If Pass Continue to Step 5.

If Fail Replace the purge valve if it leaks when closed or does not operate correctly.

Step 5

Check the Vent Valve and Charcoal Canister Area

Instruction Inspect the vent valve, charcoal canister, and nearby hoses. Look for dust contamination, cracks, loose fittings, or damaged wiring.

Expected result The vent valve should seal when commanded closed and the canister area should not show damage.

If Pass Continue to Step 6.

If Fail Repair damaged hoses, wiring, or replace a vent valve that does not seal.

Step 6

Perform a Smoke Test

Instruction Use a smoke machine to pressurize the EVAP system with low pressure and inspect carefully for small smoke leaks.

Expected result No smoke should escape from the gas cap area, filler neck, hoses, valves, canister, or tank area.

If Pass Continue to Step 7.

If Fail Repair the leak where smoke escapes. Small leaks may require careful inspection with good lighting.

Step 7

Verify the Repair

Instruction Clear the code and allow the EVAP monitor to run. The vehicle may need the fuel level between a certain range before the monitor completes.

Expected result P0456 should not return and the EVAP monitor should complete successfully.

If Pass Repair is complete.

If Fail If P0456 returns, repeat smoke testing and verify purge and vent valve sealing.
