Step 1

Check the Gas Cap

Instruction Inspect the gas cap. Make sure it is tight, the seal is not cracked, and the cap is the correct type for the vehicle.

Expected result The gas cap should tighten properly and the seal should be in good condition.

If Pass Continue to Step 2.

If Fail Replace the gas cap if it is loose, damaged, missing, or does not seal properly. Clear the code and retest.

Step 2

Check for Additional EVAP Codes

Instruction Scan for other EVAP-related codes such as purge valve, vent valve, leak detection pump, or fuel tank pressure sensor codes.

Expected result P0455 may appear alone or with other EVAP codes that help locate the fault.

If Pass Continue to Step 3.

If Fail Diagnose related EVAP circuit or sensor codes first because they may identify the failed component.

Step 3

Inspect Visible EVAP Hoses and Lines

Instruction Inspect EVAP hoses and vapor lines from the engine bay to the charcoal canister and fuel tank area. Look for disconnected, cracked, broken, or collapsed hoses.

Expected result All hoses and lines should be connected and free of damage.

If Pass Continue to Step 4.

If Fail Repair or replace damaged hoses or disconnected lines, then clear codes and retest.

Step 4

Check the Purge Valve

Instruction Inspect the purge valve and related hoses. If possible, command the purge valve with a scan tool or test whether it is stuck open.

Expected result The purge valve should remain closed when not commanded open.

If Pass Continue to Step 5.

If Fail A purge valve stuck open can create an EVAP leak. Replace or repair the purge valve circuit as needed.

Step 5

Check the Vent Valve

Instruction Inspect the EVAP vent valve near the charcoal canister. Check for dirt, corrosion, stuck-open operation, or damaged wiring.

Expected result The vent valve should seal when commanded closed.

If Pass Continue to Step 6.

If Fail Repair wiring issues or replace the vent valve if it cannot seal properly.

Step 6

Smoke Test the EVAP System

Instruction Use a smoke machine to test the EVAP system for leaks. Seal the system according to the vehicle procedure and look for smoke escaping.

Expected result No smoke should escape from hoses, canister, fuel filler neck, fuel tank area, or valves.

If Pass Continue to Step 7.

If Fail Repair the location where smoke escapes, then clear codes and retest.

Step 7

Verify the Repair

Instruction Clear the code and complete an EVAP monitor drive cycle. Some vehicles require specific fuel level and temperature conditions before the EVAP monitor runs.

Expected result P0455 should not return and the EVAP monitor should complete.

If Pass Repair is complete.

If Fail If P0455 returns, repeat leak testing and verify purge and vent valve operation.
