Diagnostic guide for P0442

P0442 Step-by-Step Diagnostic Guide

DTC P0442 indicates that the EVAP system has detected a small to medium leak. The EVAP system stores and controls fuel vapors. Common causes include a loose or weak gas cap, cracked EVAP hoses, leaking purge valve, leaking vent valve, damaged charcoal canister, or fuel filler neck leak.

Safety Notes
Work in a well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors are flammable. Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel or EVAP system.
Step 1

Inspect the Gas Cap

Instruction Remove and inspect the gas cap. Check the seal for cracks, flattening, dirt, missing rubber, or damage. Reinstall and tighten it fully.
Expected result The gas cap should tighten correctly and the seal should be clean and flexible.
If Pass Continue to Step 2.
If Fail Replace the gas cap if it is loose, damaged, missing, or does not seal correctly. Clear the code and retest.

Step 2

Check for Related EVAP Codes

Instruction Scan for additional EVAP codes related to purge valve, vent valve, leak detection pump, fuel tank pressure sensor, or large/small leak codes.
Expected result No related EVAP circuit or sensor codes should be present.
If Pass Continue to Step 3.
If Fail Diagnose related EVAP component or circuit codes first because they may affect leak detection.

Step 3

Inspect EVAP Hoses and Vapor Lines

Instruction Inspect visible EVAP hoses and vapor lines in the engine bay, near the fuel tank, and near the charcoal canister.
Expected result All hoses should be connected, flexible, and free of cracks or damage.
If Pass Continue to Step 4.
If Fail Repair damaged, cracked, disconnected, or collapsed hoses and retest.

Step 4

Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

Instruction Inspect the fuel filler neck and cap sealing surface. Look for rust, dents, damage, dirt, or sealing surface problems.
Expected result The filler neck and cap sealing surface should be clean and undamaged.
If Pass Continue to Step 5.
If Fail Clean or repair the filler neck sealing surface. Replace damaged components if needed.

Step 5

Check Purge Valve Sealing

Instruction Test whether the purge valve seals when closed. A purge valve that leaks when closed can create an EVAP leak code.
Expected result The purge valve should not allow flow when it is closed.
If Pass Continue to Step 6.
If Fail Replace the purge valve or repair the circuit if it leaks or does not operate correctly.

Step 6

Check Vent Valve and Canister Area

Instruction Inspect the EVAP vent valve, charcoal canister, filter, and nearby hoses for cracks, loose fittings, dust contamination, or damage.
Expected result The vent valve should seal when commanded closed and the canister area should be undamaged.
If Pass Continue to Step 7.
If Fail Repair damaged hoses, replace a leaking vent valve, or repair canister area leaks.

Step 7

Smoke Test the EVAP System

Instruction Use a smoke machine to test the EVAP system. Watch carefully for smoke near the gas cap, filler neck, hoses, purge valve, vent valve, canister, and tank area.
Expected result No smoke should escape from the EVAP system.
If Pass Continue to Step 8.
If Fail Repair the leak location where smoke escapes, then clear the code and retest.

Step 8

Verify the Repair

Instruction Clear the code and allow the EVAP monitor to complete. The vehicle may need a specific fuel level and temperature range before the monitor runs.
Expected result P0442 should not return and the EVAP monitor should complete.
If Pass Repair is complete.
If Fail If P0442 returns, repeat leak testing and verify purge and vent valve sealing.
