P0171 Step-by-Step Diagnostic Guide

DTC P0171 indicates that the engine is running too lean on Bank 1. This means the PCM is adding more fuel than normal to compensate for excess air, low fuel delivery, incorrect sensor readings, or an exhaust/intake leak. The diagnosis should focus on fuel trim data, vacuum leaks, intake leaks, MAF sensor accuracy, fuel pressure, and exhaust leaks.

Step 1

Check for Additional Codes

Instruction Scan the vehicle for all stored, pending, and permanent DTCs. Look for misfire codes, MAF sensor codes, oxygen sensor codes, fuel pressure codes, or EVAP purge codes.
Expected result P0171 may appear alone or with related codes that help identify the lean condition.
If Pass Continue to Step 2.
If Fail Diagnose related codes that directly affect air measurement, fuel delivery, or misfires.

Step 2

Review Fuel Trim Data

Instruction Check short-term and long-term fuel trim at idle and around 2500 RPM.
Expected result Fuel trims should not be excessively positive. A high positive fuel trim means the PCM is adding fuel to correct a lean condition.
If Pass Continue to Step 3.
If Fail If fuel trims are high at idle but improve at higher RPM, suspect a vacuum leak. If trims remain high at all RPMs, suspect fuel delivery or MAF sensor issues.

Step 3

Inspect for Vacuum Leaks

Instruction Inspect vacuum hoses, PCV hoses, intake boots, brake booster hose, intake manifold gasket area, and any disconnected or cracked hoses.
Expected result No cracked hoses, loose clamps, damaged intake boots, or vacuum leaks should be found.
If Pass Continue to Step 4.
If Fail Repair any vacuum leak, clear codes, and retest fuel trims.

Step 4

Inspect the Air Intake and MAF Sensor

Instruction Check the air filter box, intake tube, clamps, and MAF sensor area. Make sure no air is entering after the MAF sensor.
Expected result The intake system should be sealed and the MAF sensor should be clean and properly connected.
If Pass Continue to Step 5.
If Fail Repair intake leaks. If the MAF sensor is dirty, clean it with proper MAF sensor cleaner and retest.

Step 5

Check for Exhaust Leaks Before the Oxygen Sensor

Instruction Inspect the exhaust manifold, manifold gasket, and pipe area before the upstream oxygen sensor.
Expected result There should be no exhaust leak before the upstream oxygen sensor.
If Pass Continue to Step 6.
If Fail Repair exhaust leaks and retest. Outside air entering the exhaust can make the oxygen sensor report a false lean condition.

Step 6

Check Fuel Delivery

Instruction Check fuel pressure if equipment is available. Review whether the vehicle has symptoms such as hesitation, lack of power, hard starting, or lean fuel trims under load.
Expected result Fuel pressure and fuel volume should be within specification.
If Pass Continue to Step 7.
If Fail Diagnose weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, clogged injectors, or fuel pressure regulator problems if equipped.

Step 7

Check Oxygen Sensor Feedback

Instruction Monitor upstream oxygen sensor or air/fuel ratio sensor data. Confirm that the sensor responds to throttle changes and fuel trim correction.
Expected result The sensor should respond normally and should not be stuck lean.
If Pass Continue to Step 8.
If Fail Diagnose oxygen sensor, air/fuel ratio sensor, wiring, or sensor circuit problems if the sensor does not respond properly.

Step 8

Verify the Repair

Instruction After repairs are completed, clear codes and monitor fuel trims during idle, cruise, and acceleration.
Expected result Fuel trims should return closer to normal and P0171 should not return.
If Pass Repair is complete.
If Fail If P0171 returns, repeat testing and compare fuel trims at idle and higher RPM to narrow the cause.
