Step 1

Confirm the Code and Sensor Location

Instruction Scan the vehicle and confirm P0135 is stored or pending. Identify Bank 1 Sensor 1, which is the upstream oxygen sensor on the side of the engine containing cylinder number 1.

Expected result The correct sensor should be identified before testing or replacement.

If Pass Continue to Step 2.

If Fail Do not replace a sensor until Bank 1 Sensor 1 is correctly identified.

Step 3

Inspect the Sensor Connector and Wiring

Instruction Inspect the Bank 1 Sensor 1 connector and wiring harness. Look for melted insulation, broken wires, corrosion, loose terminals, or wiring touching the exhaust.

Expected result The connector should be clean and tight, and wiring should be undamaged.

If Pass Continue to Step 4.

If Fail Repair damaged wiring or connector problems before replacing the sensor.

Step 4

Check the Heater Fuse and Power Supply

Instruction Using a wiring diagram if available, check the oxygen sensor heater fuse and verify battery voltage or power supply at the heater circuit with the key on.

If Pass Continue to Step 5.

If Fail If no power is present, diagnose the fuse, relay, power feed, or wiring before replacing the oxygen sensor.

Step 5

Check Heater Ground or Control Circuit

Instruction Check the ground or PCM-controlled side of the heater circuit, depending on the vehicle design.

If Pass Continue to Step 6.

If Fail If the control side is open, shorted, or not switching correctly, diagnose wiring or PCM control before replacing parts.

Measure Oxygen Sensor Heater Resistance

Instruction With the sensor disconnected and the exhaust cool, measure resistance across the heater terminals of Bank 1 Sensor 1.

Expected result The heater should not be open or shorted. Resistance should be within the expected range for the vehicle.

If Pass Continue to Step 7.

If Fail If the heater circuit inside the sensor is open or shorted, replace Bank 1 Sensor 1.

Step 7

Verify the Repair

Instruction After repairs, clear the code and start the engine. Monitor oxygen sensor readiness and confirm P0135 does not return.

Expected result P0135 should not return and the oxygen sensor heater monitor should complete.

If Pass Repair is complete.

If Fail If P0135 returns, repeat power, ground/control, resistance, and wiring checks.
