Code U0060 Description

A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a vehicle bus standard designed to interconnect automotive devices without a host computer. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the devices. The devices have programmed information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits. CAN bus uses two dedicated wires for communication. The wires are called CAN high and CAN low. When the CAN bus is in idle mode, both lines carry 2.5V. When data bits are being transmitted, the CAN high line goes to 3.75V, and the CAN low drops to 1.25V, thereby generating a 2.5V differential between the lines. Since communication relies on a voltage differential between the two bus lines, the CAN bus is NOT sensitive to inductive spikes, electrical fields, or other noise. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) sets when a supervised periodic message that includes the transmitter device availability has not been received.

Frequently Asked Questions about U0060 Code

1. What does the OBDII code U0060 mean?

U0060 indicates an open circuit in the Vehicle Communication Bus 'D' (-), which is part of the vehicle's communication network used for data exchange between control modules.

2. What are the common symptoms of code U0060?

Symptoms may include warning lights on the dashboard (such as the check engine light), failure of certain vehicle systems (e.g., ABS, traction control), and intermittent communication issues between modules.

3. What causes the U0060 code to appear?

Common causes include damaged or corroded wiring, poor electrical connections, a faulty control module, or interference from aftermarket accessories.

4. Can I drive my car with the U0060 code active?

It depends on the severity of the issue. While the vehicle may still operate, critical systems like ABS or traction control could be impaired, making it unsafe to drive in certain conditions.

5. How do I diagnose the U0060 code?

Start by checking for damaged wiring or loose connections in the communication bus. Use a diagnostic scanner to verify module communication and inspect the bus lines for continuity.

6. What tools are needed to troubleshoot code U0060?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for testing continuity and voltage, and potentially a wiring diagram specific to your vehicle.

7. How is the U0060 code repaired?

Repairs may involve fixing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, reseating control modules, or replacing a faulty module if necessary.

8. Can aftermarket devices cause the U0060 code?

Yes, improperly installed aftermarket devices like remote starters or alarm systems can interfere with the communication bus, triggering the code.

9. How much does it cost to repair the U0060 code?

Repair costs vary. Fixing wiring or connectors is typically inexpensive, while replacing a control module can cost several hundred dollars or more, depending on the vehicle.

10. Will clearing the U0060 code with a scanner fix the issue?

Clearing the code may turn off the warning light temporarily, but if the root cause isn’t addressed, the code will likely reappear.
