Code P2728 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The pressure control solenoid 5 is part of the control solenoid valve assembly which has no serviceable parts. The normally low-pressure control solenoid 5 regulates and directs oil pressure to the 1-2-3-4 clutch regulator valve and 1-2-3-4 clutch boost valve. Increasing pressure control solenoid 5 pressure increases pressure to the 1-2-3-4 clutch. The Transmission Control Module varies the current to the pressure control solenoid 5 through a low-side driver. Increasing the current to pressure control solenoid 5 increases oil pressure by closing OFF the solenoid exhaust port. Decreasing the current to pressure control solenoid 5 decreases oil pressure by opening the exhaust port. Pressure control solenoid 5 power is supplied by the Transmission Control Module through a high side driver. The high-side driver protects the circuit and components from excessive current flow. If excessive current flow is detected, the high side driver will turn OFF. When the fault is corrected, the high-side driver will reset.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Transmission Control Module detects an internal electrical performance malfunction of the clutch pressure control solenoid valve 5 control circuit where the measured clutch pressure control solenoid valve 5 current does not equal the commanded clutch pressure control solenoid valve 5 current for 5 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2728 2016 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2728 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

P2728 indicates an issue with the pressure control solenoid "E" in the transmission, specifically a performance problem or stuck operation.

2. What are the symptoms of code P2728 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include harsh or delayed shifting, transmission slipping, poor fuel economy, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P2728 code to appear on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Potential causes include a faulty pressure control solenoid, low or dirty transmission fluid, internal transmission damage, or electrical issues like damaged wiring or a failed transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can I drive my 2016 GMC Sierra with a P2728 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it can lead to further transmission damage and unsafe driving conditions due to erratic shifting.

5. How do I diagnose the P2728 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves scanning for additional codes, checking transmission fluid condition, inspecting wiring and connectors to the solenoid, and testing the solenoid's electrical resistance.

6. How can I fix the P2728 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty pressure control solenoid, cleaning or replacing the transmission fluid, repairing damaged wiring, or addressing internal transmission issues.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P2728 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $200 to $500 for solenoid replacement. Major transmission repairs could be more expensive if internal damage is found.

8. Can a low transmission fluid level cause the P2728 code?

Yes, low or dirty transmission fluid can reduce hydraulic pressure, leading to solenoid performance issues and triggering the P2728 code.

9. Is the P2728 code specific to the GMC Sierra?

No, the P2728 code can appear on other vehicles with similar transmission systems, but the exact symptoms and fixes may vary.

10. Should I update the transmission control module (TCM) software to fix the P2728 code?

In some cases, a TCM software update from the dealership may resolve transmission performance issues, but this depends on the specific situation and diagnosis.
