Code P2544 2015 GMC Sierra Description

To improve shift feel, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) may request that the Engine Control Module (ECM) reduce engine torque during shift events. When such a request is received, the ECM responds by retarding the base ignition timing and notifying the TCM that the request has succeeded. If the ECM is unable to comply with the request, the ECM sends the TCM a message that the request has failed.
The torque reduction request is sent to the ECM through a communication network called the controller area network (CAN). Two circuits are used to communicate CAN data between the ECM and TCM.
A fault in the CAN will not cause the ECM to set the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If a CAN fault occurs, other DTCs will set before this code.
The ECM set the OBDII code when the TCM receives a torque reduction failure message from the ECM.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2544 2015 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P2544 mean for a 2015 GMC Sierra?

The OBDII code P2544 indicates a fault in the Torque Management Request Input Signal 'A', which typically involves issues with the vehicle's engine control module (ECM) or transmission control module (TCM) not receiving appropriate torque management signals.

What are the common symptoms of the P2544 code?

Common symptoms include reduced engine power, poor acceleration, and potential stalling, along with the illumination of the check engine light.

What could cause the P2544 code to trigger in a GMC Sierra?

Possible causes include damaged wiring or connectors, faulty sensors, problems with the ECM or TCM, or issues with the throttle body or transmission.

How can I diagnose the P2544 code accurately?

To diagnose the code, use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code and check for any related codes. Inspect wiring and connectors for damage, test the sensors involved in torque management, and evaluate the ECM and TCM for proper functionality.

What repairs might be necessary to fix the P2544 code?

Repairs may involve fixing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, replacing faulty sensors, reprogramming or replacing the ECM/TCM, or addressing any issues with the throttle body.

Can I drive my 2015 GMC Sierra with the P2544 code active?

It is not recommended to drive with the P2544 code active, as it can lead to reduced engine performance and could worsen the underlying issue.

How do I clear the P2544 code after repairs?

You can clear the P2544 code using an OBDII scanner by selecting the option to erase codes. Alternatively, disconnecting the battery for a short period can also reset the system, but this may erase other stored data.

Is it safe to ignore the P2544 code?

Ignoring the P2544 code is not safe, as it can lead to further mechanical issues, reduced vehicle performance, and potentially unsafe driving conditions.

What should I do if the P2544 code keeps coming back after repairs?

If the code reappears, further diagnostic testing is needed to identify any underlying issues that were not addressed during the initial repair, which may include checking for intermittent faults or re-evaluating the ECM/TCM.
