AutoCodesGMC – P2471 GMC

P2471 GMC Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4 Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) 4, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P2471 GMC Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor in the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will ve set when the ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature sensor is greater than 900 Ω for greater than 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2471 GMC Code

What does the OBDII code P2471 mean for a GMC vehicle?

P2471 indicates a high voltage issue in Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4, which monitors exhaust temperatures to protect components like the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter.

What are the common symptoms of code P2471 on a GMC?

Symptoms may include an illuminated check engine light, poor fuel efficiency, reduced engine performance, or the vehicle entering limp mode.

What causes the P2471 code to appear on a GMC?

Common causes include a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, damaged sensor wiring, corrosion in the electrical connectors, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

How can I diagnose code P2471 on my GMC?

Start by using a scan tool to confirm the code, then inspect the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4, its wiring, and connectors for damage or corrosion. Perform voltage and resistance tests on the sensor.

Can I drive my GMC with a P2471 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it could lead to damage to the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter due to inaccurate exhaust temperature readings.

How do I fix the P2471 code on a GMC?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

Is the P2471 code specific to diesel GMC vehicles?

While more common in diesel vehicles due to their use of multiple exhaust gas temperature sensors, this code can also occur in gasoline engines with similar sensor setups.

How much does it cost to repair code P2471 on a GMC?

The cost can range from $150 to $350, depending on whether the sensor needs replacement or if additional wiring repairs are required.

Can a P2471 code cause long-term damage to my GMC?

Yes, if left unaddressed, it can result in damage to expensive components like the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter due to incorrect temperature monitoring.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P2471 code on a GMC?

You’ll need an OBDII scan tool, a multimeter for testing voltage and resistance, and possibly a wiring diagram for your vehicle’s exhaust system.
