P2402 Code - Evaporative Emission Leak Detection Pump Stuck ON

Quick Answer

5 hours after the ignition switch is turned off, the leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. Common causes include Faulty Canister Pump Module, Canister Pump Module harness is open or shorted, Canister Pump Module circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P2402 Description

5 hours after the ignition switch is turned off, the leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors for leaks and actuator malfunctions based on the EVAP pressure. The leak detection pump creates negative pressure through the reference orifice. When the system is normal, the EVAP pressure is between 97 to 100 kPa(abs) [726 to 750 mmHg(abs) (Typical value)] and saturated within a minute. If not, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction. The ECM illuminates the MIL and stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if this malfunction is detected in consecutive drive cycles. The Canister Pump Module is attached to the EVAP Canister and contains the Canister Pressure Sensor, the Leak Detection Pump, and the Vent Valve.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2402 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2402 mean?

P2402 indicates that the evaporative emission (EVAP) system's leak detection pump is stuck in the ON position, preventing proper operation of the system.

2. What are common symptoms of code P2402?

Symptoms include an illuminated check engine light, failed emissions tests, a fuel odor near the vehicle, and possibly reduced fuel efficiency.

3. What causes the P2402 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty leak detection pump, damaged wiring or connectors in the EVAP system, a malfunctioning EVAP control module, or excessive corrosion in the pump assembly.

4. How serious is the P2402 code?

While it may not cause immediate drivability issues, it can lead to higher emissions, failed inspections, and potential long-term damage to the EVAP system if ignored.

5. Can you drive with a P2402 code?

Yes, but it’s recommended to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage and comply with emissions regulations.

6. How do you diagnose a P2402 code?

A mechanic will typically use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the leak detection pump and associated wiring, and perform EVAP system tests to pinpoint the fault.

7. How do you fix the P2402 code?

Repairs may involve replacing the leak detection pump, repairing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or replacing the EVAP control module.

8. How much does it cost to fix a P2402 code?

The cost varies but typically ranges from $200 to $600, depending on whether the leak detection pump or other components need replacement.

9. Can a loose gas cap cause P2402?

A loose gas cap usually causes other EVAP codes, but it’s worth checking and tightening the cap as a quick first step in diagnostics.

10. Can I clear the P2402 code without fixing the problem?

Clearing the code without addressing the root cause will likely result in the code returning and may lead to more significant EVAP system issues over time.
