P2191 KIA Code - System Too Lean At Higher Load Bank 1

Quick Answer

In order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy and emission control, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses a closed loop air/fuel metering system. Common causes include Faulty fuel injector, Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, Low fuel pressure condition. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P2191 KIA Description

In order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy and emission control, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses a closed loop air/fuel metering system. The PCM monitors the HO2S signal voltage and adjusts fuel delivery based it in closed loop fuel control. Changes in fuel delivery will be indicated by the long-term and the short-term fuel trim values. The ideal fuel trim value is around 0%. The PCM will add fuel when the HO2S signal is indicating a lean condition. Additional fuel is indicated by fuel trim values that are above 0%. The PCM will reduce fuel when the HO2S signal is indicating a rich condition. Reduction in fuel is indicated by fuel trim values that are below 0%. The DTC relevant to fuel trim will be set when the amount reaches excessive levels because of a lean or rich condition.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2191 KIA Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2191 mean on a KIA?

P2191 indicates that the engine's fuel system is running too lean on Bank 1 during higher load conditions, meaning there is too much air and not enough fuel in the mixture.

2. What are the common symptoms of P2191 in a KIA?

Symptoms include reduced engine performance, hesitation during acceleration, rough idling, poor fuel economy, or the Check Engine Light illuminating.

3. What causes the P2191 code in a KIA?

Common causes include a vacuum leak, a faulty mass airflow (MAF) sensor, a clogged fuel injector, low fuel pressure, or an exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor.

4. Can a dirty air filter trigger the P2191 code on a KIA?

While rare, a severely clogged air filter can restrict airflow and contribute to a lean condition, but it is not a primary cause.

5. How do I diagnose the P2191 code on my KIA?

Start by inspecting for vacuum leaks, checking the MAF sensor for contamination, testing fuel pressure, and inspecting the oxygen sensor and exhaust system for leaks or damage.

6. Is the P2191 code safe to drive with?

Driving with a P2191 code for an extended period can damage the engine or catalytic converter, so it’s recommended to address the issue promptly.

7. How do I fix the P2191 code on a KIA?

Repairs may include fixing vacuum leaks, cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor, replacing faulty fuel injectors, or repairing exhaust leaks.

8. Can a bad fuel pump cause a P2191 code in a KIA?

Yes, a failing fuel pump can result in low fuel pressure, which may cause the engine to run lean and trigger the P2191 code.

9. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P2191 code on a KIA?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a fuel pressure gauge, and possibly a smoke machine to detect vacuum leaks.

10. Can a software update fix the P2191 code in a KIA?

In some cases, a reflash or software update from the manufacturer can resolve fuel mixture issues if the problem stems from incorrect ECU programming.

  • This code is for insufficient fuel under high load conditions. The suggestions that it could be caused by a leaking fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator or high fuel pressure is contrary. These "causes" for the most part will result in a rich condition.
