Code P2191 Audi Description

This fault code is stored in the engine control module when the ECM is no longer capable of controlling the air-fuel ratio. For correct operation of the catalytic converter, the ECM is required to keep the air-fuel ratio (AFR) at approximately lambda 1, this equates to an AFR of 14.7:1 by mass. This is achieved by trimming the fuel mixture to the required amount to cater for slight anomalies during normal operating conditions. However, when a fault causes the fuel trim to exceed a predetermined level the malfunction indicator light is illuminated, and a limited operating strategy is employed. The pre-catalyst exhaust gas oxygen sensor is the primary component used for calculating the fuel trim once the system enters closed-loop control. The fuel trim data can be displayed as a percentage, either positive or negative.
Under this condition, the fuel trim data will display a positive value. The ECM will increase the injection duration to counteract the excessively lean mixture. This fault can be stored due to an air leak in the induction system, the exhaust system near the exhaust gas oxygen sensor, low fuel pressure, a faulty fuel injector, or a mechanical defect affecting the engine.
The fuel trim is monitored under various loads and conditions. If a load or condition is included in the fault code this can be an advantage during diagnosis. Normally a code set during idle or light load is relating to an air leak. And a code set during high, or part load can be a fueling issue or an erroneous sensor signal.

- Common symptoms include engine hesitation, rough idling, reduced power, and potential stalling during acceleration.

2. What causes the OBDII code P2191 "System Too Lean at Higher Load Bank 1" in an Audi?

- Possible causes include a vacuum leak, faulty oxygen sensor, fuel delivery issues, intake air leaks, or a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor.

3. How can I diagnose the OBDII code P2191 in my Audi?

- Diagnosis usually involves checking for vacuum leaks, inspecting the oxygen sensor, testing the mass airflow sensor, and ensuring proper fuel pressure.

4. Can a dirty air filter trigger code P2191 in an Audi?

- Yes, a dirty air filter can disrupt the air-fuel mixture ratio and lead to a lean condition, potentially triggering code P2191.

5. What are some repair tips for fixing OBDII code P2191 in an Audi?

- Repair tips may include fixing any vacuum leaks, replacing faulty oxygen sensors, cleaning or replacing the mass airflow sensor, and ensuring proper fuel delivery.

6. Is it safe to drive my Audi with the OBDII code P2191 active?

- It is generally best to address the underlying issue causing the code before continuing to drive to prevent potential damage to the engine or catalytic converter.

7. Can a clogged fuel injector cause code P2191 in an Audi?

- Yes, a clogged fuel injector can disrupt the fuel delivery, leading to a lean condition and triggering code P2191.

8. How do I reset the OBDII code P2191 in my Audi after making repairs?

- The code can be reset using an OBDII scanner or by disconnecting the car's battery for a few minutes to clear the fault code.

9. Will a failing catalytic converter trigger the OBDII code P2191 in an Audi?

- A failing catalytic converter can sometimes cause a lean condition and trigger code P2191, especially if it is clogged or inefficient.

10. What should I do if the OBDII code P2191 keeps coming back in my Audi after repairs?

- If the code keeps returning, it may indicate an ongoing issue that needs further diagnosis, such as a hidden vacuum leak or a more serious underlying problem with the fuel system.
