P2190 Smart Code - System Too Rich At Idle Bank 2

Quick Answer

This fault code is stored in the engine control module when the ECM is no longer capable of controlling the air fuel ratio. Common causes include Air Intake Restricted, Fuel Pressure, Faulty Fuel Injector. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P2190 Smart Description

This fault code is stored in the engine control module when the ECM is no longer capable of controlling the air fuel ratio. For correct operation of the catalytic converter the ECM is required to keep the air fuel ratio (AFR) at approximately lambda 1, this equates to an AFR of 14.7:1 by mass. This is achieved by trimming the fuel mixture to the required amount to cater for slight anomalies during normal operating conditions. However when a fault causes the fuel trim to exceed a predetermined level the malfunction indication light is illuminated and a limited operating strategy is employed. The pre-catalyst exhaust gas oxygen sensor is the primary component used for calculating the fuel trim once the system enters closed loop control. The fuel trim data can be displayed as a percentage, either positive or negative.
Under this condition the fuel trim data will display a negative value. The ECM will decrease the injection duration to counteract the excessively rich mixture. This fault can be stored due to a faulty coolant temperature sensor, excessively high fuel pressure or a faulty fuel injector.
The fuel trim is monitored under various loads and conditions. If a load or condition is included in the fault code this can be an advantage during diagnosis. Normally a code set during idle or light load is relating to an air leak. And a code set during high or part load can be a fuelling issue or an erroneous sensor signal.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2190 Smart Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2190 mean on a Smart vehicle?

P2190 indicates "System Too Rich at Idle Bank 2," meaning the air-fuel mixture on Bank 2 is excessively rich (too much fuel or not enough air) when the engine is idling.

2. What are the common symptoms of the P2190 code on a Smart car?

Symptoms may include rough idling, poor fuel economy, black smoke from the exhaust, engine misfires, a strong fuel smell, and possible difficulty starting the engine.

3. What causes the P2190 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, a leaking fuel injector, a clogged air filter, a malfunctioning mass airflow (MAF) sensor, or issues with the fuel pressure regulator.

4. Can a vacuum leak cause the P2190 code?

No, a vacuum leak typically causes a lean condition, not a rich one, so it is unlikely to cause the P2190 code.

5. How can I fix the P2190 code on my Smart car?

Start by inspecting and replacing any clogged air filters, cleaning the MAF sensor, checking for leaking fuel injectors, and testing the oxygen sensors. Address any issues with the fuel system or sensors as needed.

6. Is it safe to drive with the P2190 code active?

Driving with a P2190 code is not recommended as it could lead to engine damage, increased emissions, and poor fuel efficiency if the issue is not resolved.

7. How does a faulty oxygen sensor trigger the P2190 code?

A faulty downstream oxygen sensor may send incorrect data to the engine control unit (ECU), causing it to incorrectly adjust the air-fuel mixture and result in a rich condition at idle.

8. What tools do I need to diagnose the P2190 code?

You will need an OBDII scanner to retrieve the code, a multimeter to test sensors, and possibly fuel pressure testing equipment to diagnose the root cause.

9. Can a dirty mass airflow (MAF) sensor cause the P2190 code?

Yes, a dirty or faulty MAF sensor can misread the amount of air entering the engine, leading to a rich air-fuel mixture on Bank 2 at idle.

10. How much does it typically cost to fix the P2190 code?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause, ranging from $50 for a sensor cleaning to $500 or more for replacing faulty components like injectors or oxygen sensors.
