Code P2091 Chevrolet Description

The camshaft position actuator system enables the Engine Control Module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve signal from the ECM is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid valve ON time. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. The ECM controls the solenoid valve by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the ECM detects a short to voltage in the CMP actuator solenoid circuits for greater than 1 second or a cumulative of 5 seconds, when the solenoid is commanded ON.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2091 Chevrolet Code

What does the OBDII code P2091 mean for a Chevrolet vehicle?

P2091 indicates that there is a high voltage issue in the exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid valve control circuit for bank 1, which can affect the performance of the engine.

What are the common symptoms of the P2091 code?

Common symptoms include poor engine performance, rough idling, increased fuel consumption, and potential engine stalling.

What could cause the P2091 code to trigger?

Causes may include a faulty exhaust camshaft position actuator, damaged wiring or connectors in the control circuit, a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM), or issues with the timing chain.

How can I diagnose the P2091 code?

To diagnose the P2091 code, use an OBDII scanner to confirm the code, inspect the wiring and connectors for damage, test the exhaust camshaft position actuator, and check the ECM for proper functionality.

What are some common repair solutions for the P2091 code?

Repairs may involve replacing the exhaust camshaft position actuator, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming or replacing the ECM if it is found to be faulty.

Can I drive my Chevrolet with the P2091 code?

While it may be possible to drive the vehicle, it is not recommended as the engine may perform poorly, and it could lead to further damage if left unaddressed.

How much does it typically cost to repair the P2091 code?

Repair costs can vary widely, but expect to pay between $100 to $1,000 depending on whether you need to replace the actuator, fix wiring, or address more complex ECM issues.

Will clearing the P2091 code fix the problem?

Clearing the code will not fix the underlying issue; it is important to diagnose and repair the root cause to prevent the code from reappearing.

Is the P2091 code related to emissions issues?

Yes, since the exhaust camshaft position actuator plays a critical role in controlling emissions, a fault can lead to increased emissions, potentially causing the vehicle to fail emissions testing.
