Code P2091 Buick Description

The camshaft position actuator system enables the Engine Control Module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve signal from the ECM is Pulse Width Modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid valve ON time. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve. The ECM controls the solenoid valve by grounding the control circuit with a solid-state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled-up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set when the ECM detects a short to voltage in the CMP actuator solenoid circuits for greater than 1 second or a cumulative of 5 seconds, when the solenoid is commanded ON.

Frequently Asked Questions about P2091 Buick Code

1. What does the OBDII code P2091 mean on a Buick?

P2091 indicates a high voltage issue in the Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit for Bank 1, which affects the timing of the exhaust camshaft.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P2091 in a Buick?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting, and the Check Engine Light turning on.

3. What causes the P2091 code to appear in a Buick?

Common causes include a faulty exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid, wiring issues such as shorts or corrosion, or a problem with the powertrain control module (PCM).

4. Can I drive my Buick with a P2091 code?

While it may still be drivable, continuing to drive with this code can lead to reduced performance and potential engine damage. It’s best to address the issue promptly.

5. How do I diagnose a P2091 code on my Buick?

Start by checking the wiring and connectors for the actuator solenoid. Use a multimeter to test for high voltage in the circuit and inspect the solenoid for proper operation.

6. How is the P2091 code fixed on a Buick?

Repairs may include replacing the exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoid, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming or replacing the PCM if necessary.

7. How much does it cost to repair a P2091 code on a Buick?

Repair costs can vary, but replacing the solenoid typically costs $150-$300, including parts and labor. Wiring or PCM repairs may increase the expense.

8. Can a dirty engine oil cause a P2091 code in a Buick?

Yes, dirty or low engine oil can restrict the actuator solenoid’s operation, potentially triggering this code. Regular oil changes can help prevent this issue.

9. Is resetting the Check Engine Light enough to clear a P2091 code?

Resetting the light without addressing the underlying issue will only temporarily clear the code. The problem must be diagnosed and repaired to prevent it from returning.

10. What tools are needed to diagnose a P2091 code in a Buick?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter to check voltage, and potentially a wiring diagram for your vehicle to trace the circuit.
