P1355 Audi Code - Cylinder 1 Ignition Activation Circuit Open

Quick Answer

The Engine Control Module (ECM) must determine if a misfire is occurring and identify the specific cylinder(s) and the severity of the misfire event and whether it is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging. Common causes include Faulty Ignition Coil Cylinder 1, Ignition Coil Cylinder 1 harness is open or shorted, Ignition Coil Cylinder 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1355 Audi Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) must determine if a misfire is occurring and identify the specific cylinder(s) and the severity of the misfire event and whether it is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging. In order to accomplish these tasks, the control module monitors the crankshaft for acceleration losses during firing segments of each cylinder based on the firing order.
The misfire/engine roughness calculation is derived from the differences in the period duration (T) of individual increment gear segments. Each segment period consists of an angular range of 120° crank angle that starts 78° before the Top Dead Center (TDC).
If the expected period duration is greater than the permissible value a misfire fault for the particular cylinder is stored in the fault memory of the ECM. Depending on the level of misfire rate measured the control unit will illuminate the "Service Engine Soon" light, may cut off fuel to the particular cylinder, and may switch lambda operation to open-loop. All misfire faults are weighted to determine if the misfire is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1355 Audi Code

What does the OBDII code P1355 mean on an Audi?

P1355 indicates an open circuit in the ignition activation for cylinder 1, meaning the ECU is unable to properly control the ignition system for that cylinder.

What are the common symptoms of the P1355 code on an Audi?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, misfires, rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, and the check engine light being illuminated.

What causes the P1355 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty ignition coil, damaged wiring or connectors in the ignition circuit, a failed spark plug, or issues with the engine control unit (ECU).

Can a faulty ignition coil cause the P1355 code?

Yes, a faulty ignition coil is one of the most common causes of this code as it disrupts the ignition activation for cylinder 1.

How can I diagnose the P1355 code?

Start by visually inspecting the wiring and connectors for cylinder 1's ignition coil. Use a multimeter to check for continuity and test the ignition coil itself. Scanning for additional codes can also help pinpoint the issue.

Is it safe to drive with the P1355 code active?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can lead to increased fuel consumption, poor performance, potential engine damage, and unsafe driving conditions.

Can a bad spark plug trigger the P1355 code?

Yes, a worn or damaged spark plug in cylinder 1 can disrupt ignition and result in this code being triggered.

How do I fix the P1355 code on my Audi?

Repairs may include replacing the ignition coil, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors, installing a new spark plug, or, in rare cases, addressing an ECU issue.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P1355 code?

You’ll typically need an OBDII scanner, a multimeter for electrical testing, and basic hand tools for inspecting and replacing components like ignition coils and spark plugs.

How much does it cost to repair the P1355 code?

The cost depends on the issue. Replacing an ignition coil typically costs $100–$300, while spark plugs are less expensive. Labor costs may vary depending on the repair shop.
