AutoCodesMINI – P1344 MINI

P1344 MINI Code - Misfire During Start Cylinder 2

Quick Answer

As part of the CARB/OBD regulations, the Engine Control Module (ECM) must determine if a misfire is occurring and also identify the specific cylinder(s) and the severity of the misfire event and whether it is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging. Common causes include Faulty Spark Plug, Faulty Ignition Coil, Intake vacuum leak. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1344 MINI Description

As part of the CARB/OBD regulations, the Engine Control Module (ECM) must determine if a misfire is occurring and also identify the specific cylinder(s) and the severity of the misfire event and whether it is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging. In order to accomplish these tasks, the control module monitors the crankshaft for acceleration losses during firing segments of each cylinder based on firing order.
The misfire/engine roughness calculation is derived from the differences in the period duration (T) of individual increment gear segments. Each segment period consists of an angular range of 120° crank angle that starts 78° before Top Dead Center (TDC).
If the expected period duration is greater than the permissible value a misfire fault for the particular cylinder is stored in the fault memory of the ECM. Depending on the level of misfire rate measured the control unit will illuminate the "Service Engine Soon" light, may cutoff fuel to the particular cylinder and may switch lambda operation to open-loop. All misfire faults are weighted to determine if the misfire is emissions relevant or catalyst damaging.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1344 MINI Code

What does OBDII code P1344 mean for a MINI?

P1344 indicates a misfire during the start phase in cylinder 2, which may affect engine performance and emissions.

What are the common symptoms of P1344 in a MINI?

Symptoms typically include rough idling, difficulty starting, poor acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, and the check engine light illuminating.

What causes the P1344 code on a MINI?

Common causes include a faulty ignition coil, spark plug issues, fuel injector problems, vacuum leaks, or low cylinder compression.

Can driving with code P1344 damage my MINI?

Driving with P1344 can cause further damage to the engine or catalytic converter due to unburned fuel, so it's best to address the issue promptly.

How do I diagnose the P1344 code on my MINI?

Diagnosis involves checking cylinder 2’s spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, and performing a compression test to assess engine health.

How can I fix the P1344 code on a MINI?

Repairs may include replacing the spark plug or ignition coil for cylinder 2, cleaning or replacing the fuel injector, or fixing any vacuum leaks.

Can a dirty fuel injector cause the P1344 code?

Yes, a clogged or malfunctioning fuel injector in cylinder 2 can lead to improper fuel delivery and trigger the P1344 code.

Will replacing the spark plug fix the P1344 code?

If the spark plug in cylinder 2 is damaged or worn, replacing it may resolve the issue, but other components should also be inspected.

Is the P1344 code related to timing issues?

While timing problems are less common, incorrect engine timing or a stretched timing chain can occasionally contribute to misfires.

What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P1344 code on a MINI?

Tools include an OBDII scanner, a spark plug socket, a multimeter, fuel pressure gauge, and potentially a compression tester for deeper diagnosis.
