Code P1321 Dodge Description

Multi-Air is an electronically controlled variable intake valve phase and lift system. Unlike conventional intake valve phase and lift system which controls all the cylinder intake valves simultaneously and in the same proportion; Multi-Air, through the use of an electronically controlled hydraulic link between the camshaft and intake valve, allows for each intake valve to be controlled independently. The valve lift and timing can be adjusted infinitely.
The Multi-Air valve train has a mechanical camshaft lobe acting on a hydraulic pump located between the camshaft intake lobe and the intake valve. The pump provides oil under pressure to a two-way electro-hydraulic solenoid valve called the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid. The VVA Solenoid is electronically controlled during the specific intake cam lobe event by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). During the event, the VVA Solenoid is commanded to either hold oil pressure or bleed oil. The VVA Solenoid is a normally open solenoid. The PCM provides 12 volts to close the solenoid. The position of the VVA Solenoid determines the intake valve timing and lift. This change on valve action is similar to creating a change in the camshaft lobe profile affecting the lift and duration of the valve opening.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the PCM measures the time needed to turn on the VVA Solenoid. When the PCM determines that the VVA Solenoid switch on time cannot be measured a fault is set.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1321 Dodge Code

1. What does the OBDII code P1321 mean on a Dodge vehicle?

P1321 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an issue with the oil supply solenoid valve for cylinder 1, specifically that its switch ON time is immeasurable.

2. What are the common symptoms of a P1321 code on a Dodge?

Symptoms may include a rough idle, reduced engine performance, misfires, poor fuel economy, or an illuminated Check Engine Light.

3. What causes the P1321 code to appear on a Dodge?

Common causes include a faulty oil supply solenoid valve, low or dirty engine oil, clogged oil passages, damaged wiring or connectors, or a malfunctioning ECM.

4. Can dirty or old engine oil trigger the P1321 code?

Yes, dirty, low, or degraded engine oil can affect the operation of the oil supply solenoid valve and trigger the P1321 code.

5. How can I diagnose the P1321 code on my Dodge vehicle?

Start by checking the oil level and condition, inspect the oil supply solenoid valve for damage or clogs, and examine wiring and connectors for signs of wear or disconnection.

6. Is it safe to drive with a P1321 code on my Dodge?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it may lead to engine damage or reduced performance due to improper oil flow to the affected cylinder.

7. How do I fix the P1321 code on my Dodge?

Repairs may involve replacing the oil supply solenoid valve, cleaning or unclogging oil passages, changing the engine oil and filter, or repairing damaged wiring and connectors.

8. What tools are needed to troubleshoot the P1321 code on a Dodge?

You’ll need an OBDII scanner, basic hand tools, a multimeter for electrical testing, and possibly an oil pressure gauge.

9. Can a faulty ECM cause the P1321 code?

While rare, a malfunctioning ECM can misinterpret signals or fail to control the oil supply solenoid valve properly, leading to this code.

10. How much does it typically cost to fix the P1321 code on a Dodge?

Repair costs can range from $100 to $500, depending on whether the issue is related to simple maintenance like an oil change or requires replacing the oil supply solenoid valve.
