Code P1271 Nissan Description

The A/F sensor is a planar dual-cell limit current sensor. The sensor element of the A/F sensor is the combination of a Nernst concentration cell (sensor cell) with an oxygen-pump cell, which transports ions. It has a heater in the element.
The sensor is capable of precise measurement λ= 1, but also in the lean and rich range. Together with its control electronics, the sensor outputs a clear, continuous signal throughout a wide λ range (0.7 < λ < air).
The exhaust gas components diffuse through the diffusion gap at the electrode of the oxygen pump and Nernst concentration cell, where they are brought to thermodynamic balance.
An electronic circuit controls the pump current through the oxygen-pump cell so that the composition of the exhaust gas in the diffusion gap remains constant at λ = 1. Therefore, the A/F sensor is able to indicate air/fuel ratio by this pumping of current. In addition, a heater is integrated in the sensor to ensure the required operating temperature of 700 - 800 C (1,292 - 1,472 F).

Frequently Asked Questions about P1271 Nissan Code

What does the OBDII code P1271 mean on a Nissan?

P1271 indicates that the air-fuel ratio sensor (Sensor 1, Bank 1) is not detecting changes in the air-fuel mixture, suggesting a circuit issue or sensor failure.

What are the common symptoms of a P1271 code in a Nissan?

Symptoms may include poor fuel economy, rough idling, reduced engine performance, excessive emissions, and an illuminated check engine light.

What causes the P1271 code to appear on a Nissan?

Common causes include a faulty air-fuel ratio sensor, damaged or corroded wiring/connectors, a vacuum leak, or an issue with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive my Nissan with a P1271 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it may lead to increased emissions, poor performance, and potential damage to other engine components over time.

How do you diagnose a P1271 code on a Nissan?

Diagnosis typically involves inspecting the air-fuel ratio sensor, checking wiring and connectors for damage, performing a vacuum leak test, and using a scan tool to monitor sensor readings.

How do you fix a P1271 code on a Nissan?

Repairs may include replacing the air-fuel ratio sensor, repairing damaged wiring, fixing vacuum leaks, or reprogramming or replacing the ECM if necessary.

How much does it cost to fix a P1271 code on a Nissan?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $200 to $400 for sensor replacement. Wiring repairs or ECM issues could increase the cost.

Can a dirty air filter cause a P1271 code?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter can affect air intake and contribute to related air-fuel ratio issues. It’s worth inspecting the filter as part of the diagnosis.

Does a P1271 code mean the air-fuel ratio sensor is bad?

Not necessarily. While a faulty sensor is a common cause, the issue could also stem from wiring problems, a vacuum leak, or ECM malfunction.

How can I prevent a P1271 code from recurring on my Nissan?

Regular maintenance, such as inspecting sensors and wiring, replacing air filters, and addressing vacuum leaks promptly, can help prevent this code from reappearing.
