Code P1164 Acura Description

The Air/Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor 1 is installed in the exhaust system and detects oxygen content in the exhaust gas. The A/F sensor transmits output voltage to the Engine Control Module (ECM). A heater for the sensor element is embedded in the A/F sensor (sensor 1). It is activated and heats the sensor to stabilize and speed the detection of oxygen content by controlling current flowing through the heater. An increase in the current levels off as the applied voltage to the element electrode reaches a certain range because the amount of oxygen which is led through the diffusion layer is limited. The current amperage is proportional to oxygen content in the exhaust gas, so the air/fuel ratio is detected by the measurement of the current amperage. The ECM compares a set target air/fuel ratio with the detected air/fuel ratio and controls the fuel injection timing.
If the A/F sensor (sensor 1) voltage is low, the air/fuel ratio is lean, and the ECM uses A/F feedback control to issue a Rich command. If the A/F sensor (sensor 1) voltage is high, the air/fuel ratio is rich, and the ECM uses A/F feedback control to issue a Lean command.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1164 Acura Code

What does the OBD-II code P1164 mean on an Acura?

P1164 indicates a range or performance problem with the air/fuel ratio sensor 1, which monitors the air-fuel mixture in the engine for optimal combustion.

What are common symptoms of the P1164 code in an Acura?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, and poor engine performance.

What causes the P1164 code to appear in an Acura?

Common causes include a faulty air/fuel ratio sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, a vacuum leak, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive my Acura with the P1164 code?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it is not recommended to ignore this issue as it can lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to other components over time.

How is the P1164 code diagnosed in an Acura?

A mechanic will typically use a scan tool to read the code and inspect the air/fuel ratio sensor, wiring, and related systems for damage or faults. They may also monitor live data from the sensor.

How can I fix the P1164 code on my Acura?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty air/fuel ratio sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, fixing vacuum leaks, or reprogramming the ECM if necessary.

How much does it cost to fix the P1164 code on an Acura?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $200 to $400, depending on whether the air/fuel ratio sensor needs replacement or if additional repairs are required.

Can a dirty air filter cause the P1164 code?

While unlikely, a severely clogged air filter can affect the air-fuel mixture and sensor readings, so it's worth checking and replacing the filter if needed.

What is the difference between an air/fuel ratio sensor and an oxygen sensor?

The air/fuel ratio sensor is more precise and provides faster feedback to the ECM compared to a traditional oxygen sensor, enabling better control of the air-fuel mixture.

Is a software update required to fix the P1164 code on an Acura?

In rare cases, a software update to the ECM may be needed if the issue is related to incorrect programming rather than a hardware fault. A dealer or professional mechanic can confirm this.
