P1146 2004 Infiniti G35 Code - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Minimum Voltage Monitoring Bank 1

Quick Answer

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Common causes include Faulty heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear), Intake air leaks, Heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear) harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1146 2004 Infiniti G35 Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

What does the OBDII code P1146 mean on a 2004 Infiniti G35?

P1146 indicates an issue with the Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (Bank 1), where the sensor's voltage is not reaching the expected minimum threshold.

What are the symptoms of P1146 in a 2004 Infiniti G35?

Common symptoms include a check engine light, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and possible rough idling.

What causes the P1146 code to appear on a 2004 Infiniti G35?

The code is typically caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, exhaust leaks, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).

Can I drive my 2004 Infiniti G35 with the P1146 code?

While the car may remain drivable, driving with this code can lead to reduced fuel economy and potential long-term damage to the catalytic converter.

How do I diagnose the P1146 code on my Infiniti G35?

Start by inspecting the oxygen sensor wiring for damage, checking for exhaust leaks near the sensor, and testing the sensor's voltage with a multimeter.

What is the difference between Bank 1 Sensor 2 and other oxygen sensors?

Bank 1 Sensor 2 is located after the catalytic converter on the side of the engine with cylinder 1, and it monitors the efficiency of the catalytic converter.

How do I fix the P1146 error code on a 2004 Infiniti G35?

Repairs may include replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing damaged wiring, addressing exhaust leaks, or updating the ECM software if needed.

How much does it cost to repair a P1146 code on a 2004 Infiniti G35?

The cost varies, but replacing the oxygen sensor typically costs between $150 and $300, including parts and labor.

Can a dirty or clogged catalytic converter trigger the P1146 code?

Yes, a clogged catalytic converter can affect the oxygen sensor's readings, potentially triggering the P1146 code.

Will clearing the P1146 code solve the problem permanently?

Clearing the code temporarily removes it, but the underlying issue must be resolved to prevent the code from returning.
