P1146 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Code - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Minimum Voltage Monitoring Bank 1

Quick Answer

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. Common causes include Faulty heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear), Intake air leaks, Heated oxygen (O2) sensor 2 (rear) harness is open or shorted. Severity is High - diagnose this code as soon as possible. Driving is not recommended if the warning light is flashing, the engine runs poorly, or safety-related symptoms are present.

Code P1146 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 (HO2S) (Rear O2 Sensor), after three way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1146 2003 Nissan Altima Sedan Code

What does the OBDII code P1146 mean for a 2003 Nissan Altima?

P1146 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the voltage from the heated oxygen sensor 2 (Bank 1) is below the minimum threshold, suggesting an issue with the sensor or related components.

What are the symptoms of code P1146 in a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Symptoms may include the check engine light turning on, decreased fuel efficiency, rough idling, hesitation during acceleration, and increased emissions.

What causes the P1146 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, damaged wiring or connectors, exhaust leaks near the sensor, or issues with the ECM.

How can I diagnose the P1146 code?

Start by using an OBDII scanner to confirm the code. Inspect the Bank 1, Sensor 2 wiring and connectors for damage, check for exhaust leaks, and test the oxygen sensor’s voltage output with a multimeter.

Can I continue driving with the P1146 code?

While the vehicle may still run, driving with this code can lead to reduced performance, higher emissions, and potential damage to other components if not addressed promptly.

How do I fix the P1146 code on a 2003 Nissan Altima?

Repairs typically involve replacing the faulty oxygen sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, fixing any exhaust leaks, or in rare cases, reprogramming or replacing the ECM.

How much does it cost to fix code P1146?

Replacing the oxygen sensor typically costs $150–$300, including parts and labor. Additional repairs for wiring or exhaust leaks may increase the cost.

Can a dirty air filter cause code P1146?

While unlikely, a dirty air filter can contribute to poor air-fuel mixture, which might indirectly affect oxygen sensor readings. However, it’s not a common cause of this specific code.

Is a specific tool needed to replace the oxygen sensor?

Yes, an oxygen sensor socket or wrench is recommended to safely remove and install the sensor without damaging it.

Could a bad catalytic converter cause the P1146 code?

While rare, a failing catalytic converter could potentially affect downstream oxygen sensor readings, but this is usually accompanied by other diagnostic codes.
