Code P1048 Chrysler Description

Multi-Air is an electronically controlled variable intake valve phase and lift system. Unlike conventional intake valve phase and lift system which controls all the cylinder intake valves simultaneously and in the same proportion; Multi-Air, through the use of an electronically controlled hydraulic link between the camshaft and intake valve, allows for each intake valve to be controlled independently. The valve lift and timing can be adjusted infinitely.
The Multi-Air valve train has a mechanical camshaft lobe acting on a hydraulic pump located between the camshaft intake lobe and the intake valve. The pump provides oil under pressure to a two-way electro-hydraulic solenoid valve called the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid. The VVA Solenoid is electronically controlled during the specific intake cam lobe event by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). During the event, the VVA Solenoid is commanded to either hold oil pressure or bleed oil. The Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) Solenoid is a normally open solenoid. The PCM provides 12 volts to close the solenoid. The position of the VVA Solenoid determines the intake valve timing and lift. This change on valve action is similar to creating a change in the camshaft lobe profile affecting the lift and duration of the valve opening. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the Variable Valve Actuator (VVA) solenoid current feedback level in voltage is out of range.

Frequently Asked Questions about P1048 Chrysler Code

What does the OBDII code P1048 mean for a Chrysler vehicle?

P1048 indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has detected an overcurrent condition in the oil supply solenoid valve for cylinder 2.

What are the common symptoms of code P1048 in a Chrysler?

Symptoms may include reduced engine performance, rough idling, poor fuel efficiency, or the check engine light being illuminated.

What causes the P1048 code to trigger?

Common causes include a short circuit in the solenoid wiring, a faulty oil supply solenoid valve, or issues with the ECM.

Can driving with P1048 damage my Chrysler engine?

Continuing to drive with this code can lead to engine performance issues or potential internal damage if oil flow is restricted, so prompt diagnosis and repair are recommended.

How do I diagnose the P1048 code?

Diagnosis involves inspecting the wiring and connectors to the solenoid, testing the solenoid for proper operation, and verifying proper voltage and current levels.

Can I fix the P1048 code myself?

If you're experienced with automotive repairs, you can check for damaged wiring or replace the solenoid. Otherwise, it's best to consult a professional mechanic.

How much does it cost to repair the P1048 code?

Repair costs depend on the underlying issue but typically range from $100 to $300 for parts and labor, depending on whether the solenoid or wiring needs replacement.

Is a faulty ECM a common cause of P1048?

While possible, a faulty ECM is a rare cause of this code. Wiring or the solenoid itself is more likely to be the issue.

How can I prevent the P1048 code from recurring?

Regular maintenance, including checking electrical connections and replacing worn components, can help prevent this issue.

Will clearing the code with a scanner fix the problem?

Clearing the code will temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the problem will persist unless the root cause is addressed.
