Code P0973 Cadillac Description

The shift solenoid 1 is part of the control solenoid valve assembly which has no serviceable parts. The shift solenoid 1 is a normally closed ON/OFF solenoid and is controlled by the Transmission Control Module through a low side driver. When the shift solenoid 1 is energized, shift solenoid 1 fluid pressure is directed to the clutch select valve 2. Power to the shift solenoid 1 is supplied by the Transmission Control Module through a high-side driver. The high-side driver protects the circuit and components from excessive current flow. If excessive current flow is detected, the high side driver will turn OFF. When the fault is corrected, the high-side driver will reset. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the control solenoid valve assembly detects an internal low voltage electrical malfunction of the shift solenoid 1 control circuit when the shift solenoid 1 is commanded OFF for 2 seconds.

Discuss the causes and fixes for P0973 Cadillac OBDII Code

  • Had a PO973 code on a 2004 Cadillac SRX. It wouldn't shift out of gear. Once you let it parked for a while It drove fine and shifted fine. It happened twice. Trans fluid had been changed at 100,000 miles. I then changed all three shift solenoids with filter and fluid and noticed a definite change in shifting to the better. Vehicle has 155,000 miles on it, and shifts solid and easily between gears now. hopefully no other damage.
Shift solenoids are getting hard to find at the GM dealers and I had to pay a premium price to get these but knowing that they were made for that transmission was why I didn't got for an after market parts company. I hate doing things twice. Just some advice from a person who had a code PO973.
