Code P0732 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated gear ratio with 2nd gear commanded differs from the known 6th gear ratio for 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0732 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0732 mean on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0732 indicates that the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an incorrect gear ratio for 2nd gear, meaning the actual gear ratio does not match the expected ratio.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0732 in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include difficulty shifting into or out of 2nd gear, transmission slipping, reduced fuel efficiency, poor acceleration, and the illumination of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P0732 code to appear in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include low transmission fluid, worn or damaged clutches or bands, a malfunctioning shift solenoid, a faulty transmission speed sensor, or internal transmission issues.

4. Can low transmission fluid cause the P0732 code in my Silverado?

Yes, low or degraded transmission fluid can cause improper hydraulic pressure, leading to an incorrect gear ratio in 2nd gear and triggering the P0732 code.

5. How do I diagnose the P0732 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, inspecting wiring and connectors for damage, and testing the transmission speed sensors and shift solenoids with a scan tool or multimeter.

6. What repairs can fix the P0732 code in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Possible repairs include replacing or topping off the transmission fluid, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, replacing a faulty shift solenoid or speed sensor, or rebuilding the transmission if internal damage is found.

7. Is it safe to drive with the P0732 code on my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Driving with this code is not recommended, as it can cause further transmission damage and may result in unsafe driving conditions due to gear slipping or poor performance.

8. How much does it cost to repair a P0732 code on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs can vary widely, from $100–$300 for fluid and sensor replacements to $1,000 or more if a transmission rebuild is needed.

9. Can a faulty speed sensor cause the P0732 code in my Silverado?

Yes, a malfunctioning input or output speed sensor can provide incorrect data to the TCM, leading to the detection of an incorrect gear ratio in 2nd gear.

10. How can I prevent the P0732 code from occurring in my 2016 Chevrolet Silverado?

Regularly check and maintain transmission fluid levels, address transmission issues promptly, and ensure all sensors and solenoids are in good working condition to prevent this code.
