Code P0731 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

The transmission turbine speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor are hall-effect sensors. The turbine speed sensor is mounted to the transmission housing and faces the reluctor attached to the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing. The vehicle speed sensor is mounted to the low and reverse clutch housing on 2WD, or transfer case rear case half on 4WD. The vehicle speed sensor faces a reluctor wheel attached to the transmission output shaft on 2WD, or a reluctor wheel attached to the transfer case rear output shaft on 4WD.
The TCM provides a 9 V reference circuit and a signal circuit to each of the sensors. As the 1-2-3-4-5-6 clutch piston housing and transmission output shaft or transfer case output rotates, the sensors produce a signal frequency based on the teeth on the reluctor wheel. The TCM calculates the transmission gear ratio based on the speed sensor signals and compares the calculated gear ratio to the commanded gear ratio.
The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the TCM detects the calculated gear ratio with 1st gear commanded differs from the known 1st gear ratio for 2 s.

1. What does the OBDII code P0731 mean for a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0731 indicates that the transmission is experiencing an issue with the 1st gear ratio, meaning the expected gear ratio does not match the actual ratio detected by the vehicle's sensors.

2. What are common symptoms of code P0731 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms may include delayed or harsh shifting, inability to shift into 1st gear, reduced acceleration, transmission slipping, or the check engine light turning on.

3. What causes the P0731 code in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Common causes include low or contaminated transmission fluid, a faulty transmission solenoid, damaged gear components, or issues with the transmission control module (TCM).

4. Can low transmission fluid cause the P0731 code?

Yes, low or dirty transmission fluid can lead to incorrect gear ratios and trigger the P0731 code.

5. How can I diagnose the P0731 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition, then inspect the transmission solenoids, internal gear components, and wiring. Use a scan tool to monitor gear ratio data.

6. Can driving with code P0731 damage the transmission?

Yes, continuing to drive with this code can lead to increased wear on the transmission and potential long-term damage.

7. How is P0731 fixed on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may involve replacing or repairing the transmission solenoids, updating or reprogramming the TCM, cleaning or replacing the transmission fluid, or addressing internal transmission damage.

8. Is P0731 specific to the 1st gear in the transmission?

Yes, P0731 specifically relates to an incorrect ratio in the 1st gear, which is crucial for initial acceleration and vehicle movement.

9. How much does it cost to repair the P0731 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repair costs vary depending on the cause, ranging from $100 for fluid replacement to over $2,000 for major transmission repairs.

10. Can the P0731 code be fixed without replacing the transmission?
