Code P0717 Pontiac Description

The Input Speed Sensor detects the primary pulley revolution speed and sends a signal to the Transmission. The Input Speed Sensor (ISS) is a hall-effect type sensor. The ISS mounts to the control valve upper body assembly and connects to the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly through a wire harness and connector. The sensor faces the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing machined teeth surface. The sensor receives 8.3-9.3 volts on the Input/Output Speed Sensor (ISS/OSS) supply voltage circuit from the Transmission Control Module (TCM). As the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing rotates, the sensor produces a signal frequency based on the machined surface of the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing. This signal is transmitted through the ISS signal circuit to the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly. The control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly uses the ISS signal to determine line pressure, transmission shift patterns, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) slip speed, and gear ratio. Control Module (TCM) and the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM sets the OBDII code when the Input Speed Sensor is out of factory specifications. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0717 is detected when TCM or ECM receives no signal from the sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0717 Pontiac Code

What does the OBDII code P0717 mean on a Pontiac?

1. P0717 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected no signal from the input/turbine speed sensor, which monitors the rotational speed of the transmission's input shaft. 2.

What are the common symptoms of a P0717 code in a Pontiac?

Common symptoms include harsh or delayed shifting, transmission slipping, reduced fuel efficiency, erratic speedometer readings, and activation of the check engine light. 3.

What causes the P0717 code to appear on a Pontiac?

Possible causes include a faulty input/turbine speed sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, poor electrical connections, or, in rare cases, a malfunctioning PCM. 4.

Can I drive my Pontiac with a P0717 code?

Driving with a P0717 code is not recommended, as it may lead to poor transmission performance and potential long-term damage to the transmission. 5.

How do you diagnose a P0717 code on a Pontiac?

Diagnosis involves using a scan tool to confirm the code, inspecting the speed sensor and its wiring for damage, testing the sensor with a multimeter, and checking for any related transmission issues. 6.

How do you fix the P0717 code on a Pontiac?

Repairs may include replacing the input/turbine speed sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or, if needed, reprogramming or replacing the PCM. 7.

How much does it cost to repair a P0717 code on a Pontiac?

The repair cost varies, but replacing the input/turbine speed sensor typically costs $150-$300, including parts and labor. Additional repairs may increase the cost. 8.

Where is the input/turbine speed sensor located on a Pontiac?

The input/turbine speed sensor is typically located on the transmission housing, near the input shaft. 9.

Can a bad input/turbine speed sensor damage my Pontiac’s transmission?

Yes, if left unaddressed, a faulty sensor can cause improper shifting and increased wear on the transmission, potentially leading to costly repairs. 10.

Will resetting the check engine light fix a P0717 code on a Pontiac?

Resetting the light without addressing the underlying issue will not fix the problem. The code will likely reappear if the root cause isn’t resolved.
