P0546 2014 GMC Sierra Code - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High Voltage

Quick Answer

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Common causes include Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) 1, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted, Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 1 circuit poor electrical connection. Severity is Moderate - service should be scheduled soon. The vehicle may still be drivable for short trips if it runs normally, but avoid hard driving and repair it soon.

Code P0546 2014 GMC Sierra Description

The Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors (EGTS) are variable resistors that measure the temperature of the exhaust gas. Exhaust temperature sensor 1 is the first exhaust temperature sensor in the exhaust system, the following exhaust temperature sensors are counted upward from the engine outlet to the exhaust system end. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the exhaust gas temperature signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit. The exhaust gas temperature sensor temperature information is used by the ECM during the exhaust gas particulate filter cleaning process. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will ve set when the ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature sensor is greater than 900 Ω for greater than 2 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0546 2014 GMC Sierra Code

1. What does OBDII code P0546 mean on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

P0546 indicates a high voltage issue in the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 1 circuit, meaning the sensor is detecting unusually high exhaust gas temperatures or a circuit malfunction.

2. What are the symptoms of code P0546 on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Common symptoms include the check engine light turning on, reduced fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, and in some cases, the vehicle entering limp mode.

3. What causes code P0546 on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The code can be triggered by a faulty EGT sensor, damaged or corroded wiring, poor electrical connections, or excessive exhaust temperatures caused by engine issues.

4. Can I drive my 2014 GMC Sierra with code P0546?

Driving with code P0546 is not recommended as it may indicate high exhaust temperatures, which can damage other components like the catalytic converter or turbocharger.

5. How is code P0546 diagnosed?

A technician will use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the EGT sensor and wiring for damage, and test the sensor’s voltage readings to identify the problem.

6. How do you fix code P0546 on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may involve replacing the EGT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connections, or addressing underlying engine issues causing high exhaust temperatures.

7. How much does it cost to fix code P0546 on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $150 to $300 for parts and labor to replace the EGT sensor. Additional costs may apply if wiring or other components are involved.

8. Where is Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 1 located on a 2014 GMC Sierra?

The EGT Sensor 1 is typically located in the exhaust system upstream of the catalytic converter, often near the turbocharger if equipped.

9. Can a faulty EGT sensor cause other problems in my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a faulty EGT sensor can lead to incorrect engine management, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential damage to the exhaust system or turbocharger if not addressed.

10. How can I prevent code P0546 from recurring on my 2014 GMC Sierra?

Regular maintenance, inspecting the exhaust system for damage, and promptly addressing any check engine light warnings can help prevent this issue from recurring.
