Code P0522 2016 GMC Sierra Description

The engine oil pressure sensor changes voltage based on the engine oil pressure. The engine oil pressure sensor is a 3-wire sensor comprising the signal circuit, the low reference circuit, and the 5 V reference circuit. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the engine oil pressure sensor via the 5 V reference circuit and provides ground via the low reference circuit. The ECM monitors the signal circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor to determine if the engine oil pressure sensor voltage is within the normal operating range of approximately 1 - 4 V. When the engine oil pressure is high, the engine oil pressure sensor voltage is high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. When the engine oil pressure is low, the engine oil pressure sensor voltage is low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage. The ECM sends the engine oil pressure information to the instrument cluster via serial data. The instrument cluster will illuminate or display the engine oil pressure indicator when the engine oil pressure is low. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when the ECM detects that the engine oil pressure sensor signal circuit is less than 0.2 V for greater than 10 s.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0522 2016 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P0522 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The P0522 code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage signal from the engine oil pressure sensor, which monitors oil pressure levels.

What are the common symptoms of code P0522 in a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms can include the engine oil pressure warning light turning on, inaccurate oil pressure readings on the gauge, engine performance issues, and in some cases, engine knocking.

What causes the P0522 code to appear on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty oil pressure sensor, low engine oil levels, damaged wiring or connectors in the oil pressure sensor circuit, or a failing ECM.

Can I continue driving my 2016 GMC Sierra with the P0522 code?

Driving with this code is not recommended as it could indicate low oil pressure, which may lead to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly.

How do I diagnose the P0522 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Diagnosis typically involves checking the engine oil level, inspecting the oil pressure sensor and its wiring for damage, and using a scan tool to monitor sensor readings.

How do I fix the P0522 code on my 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may include replacing the oil pressure sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, ensuring proper oil levels, and in rare cases, addressing ECM issues.

Can low engine oil cause the P0522 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Yes, low engine oil levels can result in low oil pressure, which may trigger the P0522 code.

How much does it cost to repair the P0522 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

The cost can vary, but replacing the oil pressure sensor typically costs between $100 and $300, including parts and labor.

What tools are needed to replace the oil pressure sensor on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

You will need a ratchet, an oil pressure sensor socket, and possibly a torque wrench to replace the sensor properly.

Can a dirty oil filter cause the P0522 code on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Yes, a clogged or dirty oil filter can restrict oil flow, potentially causing low oil pressure and triggering the P0522 code.
