Code P0463 2016 GMC Sierra Description

Diesel Engine
The primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor change resistance based on fuel level. The Fuel Pump Driver Control Module monitors the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor and sends the signal information to the Engine Control Module (ECM) for all further handling. The ECM uses this value in order to determine the fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the resistances of both fuel level sensors are low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage on both the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor. When the fuel tank is empty, the resistances of the fuel level sensors are high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. The ECM uses the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor in order to calculate the percentage of remaining fuel in the tank. The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects the signal voltage is greater than 4.7 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0463 2016 GMC Sierra Code

What does OBDII code P0463 mean on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Code P0463 indicates that the fuel level sensor circuit is reporting a voltage higher than expected, suggesting an issue with the fuel level sensor or its wiring.

What are the common symptoms of code P0463?

Symptoms include inaccurate or fluctuating fuel gauge readings, a check engine light, and difficulty determining the proper fuel level in the tank.

What causes code P0463 on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty fuel level sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the fuel level sensor circuit, or issues with the fuel pump assembly.

Can code P0463 affect vehicle performance?

While it typically does not affect engine performance, inaccurate fuel level readings can lead to running out of fuel unexpectedly, which could cause engine stalling.

How do you diagnose code P0463?

Diagnosing involves inspecting the fuel level sensor, checking the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, and using a multimeter to test for proper voltage in the sensor circuit.

Can you drive with code P0463?

You can drive with this code, but it’s risky due to potential fuel gauge inaccuracies, which might lead to running out of fuel without warning.

How is code P0463 fixed on a 2016 GMC Sierra?

Repairs typically involve replacing the faulty fuel level sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or replacing the entire fuel pump assembly if the sensor is integrated.

How much does it cost to repair code P0463?

Repair costs can vary; a fuel level sensor replacement may range from $200 to $400, while a complete fuel pump assembly replacement could cost $500 to $800, including labor.

Can a bad fuel level sensor cause other problems?

A faulty sensor primarily affects fuel gauge accuracy, but it can also lead to inconvenience and potential safety risks if the vehicle runs out of fuel unexpectedly.

Is code P0463 a common issue in the 2016 GMC Sierra?
