Code P0463 2015 GMC Sierra Description

Diesel Engine
The primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor change resistance based on fuel level. The Fuel Pump Driver Control Module monitors the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor and sends the signal information to the Engine Control Module (ECM) for all further handling. The ECM uses this value in order to determine the fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the resistances of both fuel level sensors are low, and the ECM senses a low signal voltage on both the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor. When the fuel tank is empty, the resistances of the fuel level sensors are high, and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. The ECM uses the signal circuits of the primary fuel level sensor and the secondary fuel level sensor in order to calculate the percentage of remaining fuel in the tank. The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

Gasoline Engine

The ECM sends the fuel level percentage via the serial data circuit to the instrument cluster in order to control the fuel gauge.

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set if the ECM detects the signal voltage is greater than 4.7 V.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0463 2015 GMC Sierra Code

What does the OBDII code P0463 mean for a 2015 GMC Sierra?

P0463 indicates that the fuel level sensor circuit is reporting a high voltage, often due to an issue with the fuel level sensor or related wiring.

What are common symptoms of code P0463 in a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Symptoms include inaccurate fuel gauge readings, an illuminated check engine light, and potential difficulty monitoring fuel levels.

What causes the P0463 code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Common causes include a faulty fuel level sensor, damaged wiring or connectors in the fuel level circuit, or a malfunctioning PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

Can I still drive my 2015 GMC Sierra with the P0463 code?

Yes, the vehicle is typically drivable, but inaccurate fuel gauge readings may lead to running out of fuel unexpectedly.

How is the P0463 code diagnosed on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

A mechanic will use a scan tool to confirm the code, inspect the fuel level sensor, wiring, and connectors, and test the circuit for proper voltage and resistance.

How do you fix the P0463 code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Repairs may involve replacing the fuel level sensor, repairing damaged wiring or connectors, or reprogramming the PCM if necessary.

How much does it cost to fix the P0463 code on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Repair costs can range from $150 to $500, depending on whether the fuel level sensor needs replacement or if wiring repairs are required.

Can a bad fuel pump cause the P0463 code in a 2015 GMC Sierra?

While uncommon, issues with the fuel pump assembly (which houses the fuel level sensor) could contribute to this code.

What tools are needed to diagnose the P0463 code in a 2015 GMC Sierra?

Common tools include an OBDII scanner, multimeter, and access to wiring diagrams for the fuel level circuit.

Will clearing the P0463 code fix the issue permanently on a 2015 GMC Sierra?

No, clearing the code may temporarily turn off the check engine light, but the underlying issue must be addressed to prevent the code from returning.
