Code P0455 Scion Description

5 hours after the ignition switch is turned off, the leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors for leaks and actuator malfunctions based on the EVAP pressure. The leak detection pump creates negative pressure through the reference orifice. When the system is normal, the EVAP pressure is between 97 to 100 kPa(abs) [726 to 750 mmHg(abs) (Typical value)] and saturated within a minute. If the leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in the EVAP system and the EVAP system pressure is measured. If the stabilized system pressure is higher than [second reference pressure x 0.2] (near atmospheric pressure), the ECM determines that the EVAP system has a large leak, illuminates the MIL, and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).
The Canister Pump Module is attached to the EVAP Canister and contains the Canister Pressure Sensor, the Leak Detection Pump, and the Vent Valve.

  • can a gross evap leak trip a lean burn code PO171?

  • It's possible, if the EVAP leaks into the engine.

  • P0455 is a leak issue which normally you can expect the gas cap oring has gone bad or a bad vacuum hose in the evap system. However, do not forget to check something else. Let me tell you about a smog test I just got on my 2011 Toyota sienna. The car runs like new, very clean and low mileage. I was planning to sell it but a person who called about it reminded me that I had to smog first before it sold. That day, I took it down and had it smogged which passed with flying colors. What I did not expect was filling the car with gas and parking it in my driveway and washing, cleaning and shining chrome. With less than a mile since the smog was done, all of a sudden all lights went off on the dash. My code reader read P0451. I checked all sensors thinking he unplugged them or a vacuum line, starting at engine and working my way back to rear of car. I had found something strange under the rear wheel which looked like a jack mark on what looked like metal but was plastic. Upon further examination, there were dried chemical marks and behind the plastic was my gas tank fuel line hose. After removing this cover, I found two holes cut into this hose from the plastic cover which must of been leaking until all the gas drained out. I had replaced the gas fill line to the tank and heated up the plastic cover to correct the bends and breaks in the plastic, and put on a label stating not to jack here, FUEL LINE. Stared the car and checked the code reader which now reads cleared. In reality, Toyota should have made this cover in metal or aluminum or some sort of protection to prevent this issue. The put an arrow on the side of the car at bottom indicating to jack here. So I do not blame the smog guy. The lip you can jack from is very small but thos plastc cover looks like the frame of the car. I bet this happens to more cars then we know. Rob
