P0446 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code - Evaporative Emission Vent System Performance

Quick Answer

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) tests the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for a restricted or blocked EVAP vent path that would cause excess amounts of vacuum to be developed in the EVAP system. Common causes include Plugged vapor canister, Pinched or blocked EVAP hose, Faulty Evaporative Emission Vent Solenoid Valve. Severity is Low - monitor the vehicle and repair when practical. The vehicle can usually be driven if no severe symptoms are present, but symptoms should be checked before extended driving.

Code P0446 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Description

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) tests the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for a restricted or blocked EVAP vent path that would cause excess amounts of vacuum to be developed in the EVAP system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) commands the EVAP purge solenoid valve Open and the EVAP vent solenoid valve Closed. This allows vacuum to be applied to the EVAP system. Once a calibrated vacuum level has been reached, the ECM commands the EVAP purge solenoid valve Closed and the EVAP vent solenoid valve Open. The ECM monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor for a decrease in vacuum. If the vacuum does not decrease to near 0 in H2O in a calibrated time, this DTC sets.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0446 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0446 mean on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

P0446 indicates an issue with the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) vent system, specifically a malfunction or restriction in the vent control circuit.

2. What are the common symptoms of code P0446 in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Symptoms include an illuminated Check Engine Light, possible fuel odors near the vehicle, and in some cases, difficulty refueling due to pressure buildup in the fuel tank.

3. What causes the P0446 code to appear on a 2017 Chevy Silverado?

Common causes include a faulty EVAP vent solenoid, clogged or restricted vent lines, electrical issues like damaged wiring or connectors, or a malfunctioning vapor canister.

4. Can I still drive my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with a P0446 code?

Yes, the vehicle is generally safe to drive with a P0446 code, but it may fail emissions testing and could lead to reduced fuel efficiency or fuel system damage if not addressed.

5. How do I diagnose the P0446 code on a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Diagnosis typically involves inspecting the EVAP vent solenoid for proper operation, checking for clogged vent lines, testing electrical connections, and using a smoke machine to detect leaks in the EVAP system.

6. How do I fix the P0446 code on my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado?

Repairs may involve replacing the EVAP vent solenoid, clearing debris or blockages in the vent lines, repairing damaged wiring, or replacing the vapor canister if it’s defective.

7. How much does it cost to fix the P0446 code on a 2017 Chevy Silverado?

Repair costs vary but typically range from $100 to $300, depending on whether the vent solenoid, wiring, or other components need replacement.
