  • Hi. This is just from personal experience with my 96 Civic and that darn P0420 that at first took 9 months or more to appear and then over the yrs showed up more often. For example not always is that code valid it sometimes will just show up and if you clear it then it may not come back until a month or months later. If you have this issue try cleaning the throttle body really well.You could use Seafoam designed to clean the throttle body etc. Even taking the distributor cap off and cleaning the 4 metal contacts with a wire brush and sandpaper can help the car run better. Again note even if you don't change the rotor or cap cleaning their connections can make a huge difference.You will notice that the rotor has one say 3-4 inch long metal connector and one centre metal round connector they can be cleaned too.Also clean your caps plug in wire connectors and don't forget to clean the wire plug in connectors.You can even push them on and off several times to help clean them.

    I know many ppl have this issue especially when dealing with engine lights and e-testing or smog testing. Remember that the 02 sensor after the cat can detect odd or rich/lean conditions and send a fault signal to the ECM which will in turn turn the engine light on. I can't tell you how many times I was concerned about code P0420 thinking will I have to replace the catalytic converter or junk the car. You know even after 6 yrs and 4 E-tests later that code still likes to show up. Get this 2 yrs ago I had to do a E-test and believe it or not the results of that E-test had the lowest test readings so far they were so low some were a tenth of the max allowed. Again be sure you do a full tune up, even clean the battery terminals, clean the engine grounds etc and don't forget to change the oil all of these things as well as the other stuff I've mentioned can greatly help smog or e-test results or at least get rid of that code. Note if you do disconnect the battery due to cleaning the posts etc the car's ECM will lose it's drive cycle info and reset any codes so before you try any e-tests etc make sure you allow it to perform the drive cycle tests fully first and a good scanner will show you that info.In some places you can rent or borrow a scanner.

    Incomplete drive cycles also can occur to cause e-tests to not be performed or to fail and there's a few methods to help get the drive cycle to complete and more then likely it completes a lot faster then usual 100-200 miles later. Step 1 let the car sit over night then start it up cold and turn on the blower motor. Sit awhile till the car is almost warmed up.Drive it in the city at 25-35 mpg and come to full stops don't perform any roll to a stop.Try to take off from stops a bitter faster then normal driving and drive say for 5 mins or so in city. Go to a major hwy and try to drive on it at speeds of 55 and no faster then 65. Don't brake and find a good long off ramp that say is 5 mins at least away. Exit the hwy but don't brake with your foot paddle or shift down, allow the car to come to a rolling stop and use emergency brake to stop. Go back into city driving like you did earlier and this time after say 5 mins of stop and go driving park and let car sit idling for 2 mins or so then shut it off.Note if you've a good scanner it can tell you if the drive cycle tests are complete or what wasn't complete and is now.

    I'am writing this long reply to try and help ppl save money and avoid major headaches etc.Trust me this stuff works I just went through it and my car passed E-test with flying colors.Note I also recommend watching your exhaust fumes when you first start it up and after it's warmed up and after you drive your car awhile. Also check it when you clean the throttle body, note I only used regular throttle body cleaner after the car was warmed up and you could see the crap coming out of the exhaust during the cleaning and after man it was clean. Look up what different color exhaust fumes mean for example blue smoke means oil might be in the fumes or you may have dirty oil. Black smoke means too rich or lean exhaust and constant large white fumes can be engine issues. Best wishes to all and Merry Xmas , Happy New Years.
