The EGR system on recently built vehicles uses a step motor to control the flow rate of EGR from exhaust manifold. This motor has four winding phases. It operates according to the output pulse signal of the ECΜ. Two windings are turned ON and OFF in sequence. Each time an ON pulse is issued, the valve opens or closes, changing the flow rate. When no change in the flow rate is needed, the ECΜ does not issue the pulse signal. Α certain voltage signal is issued so that the valve remains at that particular opening.

On past rebuild of the 3.5L DOHC 6VE1 and 3.2L DOHC 6VD1 engine, carbon will build up in the long tube that feeds inside the Lower Intake Manifold. Remove this manifold, and at rear knocking the cup plug out of hole. I used a long drill bit from LOWE's to drill and loosen hardened carbon that had formed inside the tube. You might have to run drill in and out and wiggle it if using small diameter. You will have to clean bit and use a good cleaner to flush hole out. Might be good to have engine shop run it thru parts washer. Where the EGR tube feeds from the Exhaust Manifold to the back of the Lower Intake Manifold, clean it as well. There is a cup plug also on side that can be removed and drill inserted there. Looks to make a 45 deg turn to feed in to Lower Intake Manifold. Seems like it could be restrictive when carbon builds up in there. Just my experience.
