Code P0230 Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) provides ignition positive voltage to the coil side of the fuel pump relay. When the ignition switch is first turned ON, the ECM energizes the fuel pump relay, which applies power to the fuel pump. The ECM enables the fuel pump relay as long as the engine is cranking or running, and crankshaft reference pulses are received. If no crankshaft reference pulses are received, the ECM de-energizes the fuel pump relay after 2 seconds. The ECM monitors the voltage on the fuel pump relay control circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0230 Code

1. What does the OBDII code P0230 indicate?

The P0230 code indicates a malfunction in the primary circuit of the fuel pump, suggesting that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an issue with the electrical circuit that controls the fuel pump.

2. What are common symptoms of code P0230?

Symptoms include a stalled engine, difficulty starting the vehicle, poor engine performance, and the check engine light turning on.

3. What can cause a P0230 code to appear?

Causes may include faulty fuel pump relay, bad fuel pump, issues with the wiring or connectors in the fuel pump circuit, or a defective PCM.

4. How do I diagnose a P0230 code?

Diagnosis should start with a visual inspection of the fuel pump wiring and connectors for damage or loose connections. Next, test the fuel pump relay and the voltage at the fuel pump itself. If these components are functioning properly, further testing of the PCM may be necessary.

5. Is it safe to drive with a P0230 code?

Driving a vehicle with a P0230 code can be risky as it may result in stalling or difficulties in starting the engine, which could put you in unsafe situations. It is advisable to address the issue promptly.

6. How can I fix the P0230 code?

Repairs might involve replacing a faulty fuel pump, repairing or replacing damaged wiring or connectors in the fuel pump circuit, or replacing a defective fuel pump relay. In rare cases, replacement of the PCM may be required.

7. What tools are required to diagnose and repair a P0230 code?

Tools needed include a digital multimeter, a scan tool, and basic hand tools. A wiring diagram for the vehicle can also be extremely helpful for tracing circuit issues.

8. Could a P0230 code be triggered by a simple mistake?

Yes, something as simple as a loose connector at the fuel pump or a corroded terminal in the relay could trigger this code. Always check for the simplest solutions first.

9. What impact does a P0230 code have on fuel economy?

Since the fuel pump may not operate correctly when the P0230 code is present, it can lead to poor fuel delivery, which in turn may result in decreased fuel efficiency.

10. How often does a P0230 code occur?

Occurrence can vary widely depending on the vehicle's make, model, age, and condition of the fuel system components. Regular maintenance can help prevent occurrences related to wear and tear or aging parts.

  • AFTER REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP FOR MY SONATA 20LR engine now i have to crank the engine three 3 times inorder to stay running(3 attemps)

  • Either the new fuel pump is faulty or one of the connection to the fuel pump was not properly installed.

  • thanks for your reply put the engine runs very well after theird attemp and shows no sign of bad pump or bad connection i even made amps test to the new pump and showed 3 amps wich is good i think i am rely confued. is there any that yuo can send to me a wiring diagram for the fuel system?

  • The fuel pump it suppose to hold pressure when the engine is turned off. If the fuel pump is bad, it wont hold pressure and it will take longer for the fuel system to build pressure.

I could try to get you wire diagram, what year is your Sonata?

  • thank you very much for your kind help.
you right the new pump was leaking the fuel after stoping the engine from its filter assy . i changed the filter with new one its working perfect now thanks again and please if yoy still want to send the diagram for fuel cicuit my sonata is 2008 model.
