I have a 2004 Freestar 4.2, it has a P0180 code. Fuel temperature Sensor A circuit. Then dealer says this van does not have a fuel temperature sensor. I have no symptoms other than then engine light being on.
I replaced the fuel filter and the Engine temperature sensor. Any ideas? -
Is part of the Fuel Gauge Sender Unit / Fuel Pressure Sensor. You can't replace the sensor by it self you have to replace the Fuel Gauge Sender Unit Assembly.
Have you tried clearing the code? sometimes the code is set when the fuel level gets too low.
-
After weeks of searching, I finally found a site that mentions that. The fuel temperature sensor and the fuel pressure sensor are in the same unit. I even had called the dealer and they said there is no fuel temp sensor. I found that out this morning, changed it and code is gone. Yes, I had cleared it many times, it came right back on. Thanks much for your response.

The P0180 - Engine Fuel Temperature Sensor 'A' Circuit code on your 2005 Ford Expedition indicates an issue with the fuel temperature sensor circuit, which monitors the temperature of the fuel to help the engine control module (ECM) adjust fuel delivery accordingly.
Steps to Replace the Fuel Temperature Sensor:
-
Locate the Sensor:
- On the 2005 Ford Expedition, the fuel temperature sensor is typically integrated into the fuel rail pressure sensor (FRPS), located on the fuel rail near the intake manifold.
- If your vehicle has a standalone sensor, it might be found along the fuel line or inside the fuel tank (part of the fuel pump assembly).
-
Gather Necessary Tools:
- Socket set and ratchet
- Fuel line disconnect tool (if needed)
- Screwdrivers
- Safety goggles and gloves
-
Depressurize the Fuel System:
- Before working on the fuel system, relieve fuel pressure by doing the following:
- Disconnect the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine until it stalls.
- Alternatively, you can release pressure using the Schrader valve on the fuel rail with a rag to catch excess fuel.
- Before working on the fuel system, relieve fuel pressure by doing the following:
-
Remove the Sensor:
- If the sensor is on the fuel rail:
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Locate and unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
- Use a socket or wrench to carefully remove the sensor from the fuel rail.
- If itβs inside the fuel tank, the process is more complex and may require dropping the fuel tank.
- If the sensor is on the fuel rail:
-
Install the New Sensor:
- Carefully thread the new sensor into place and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.
- Reconnect the electrical connector.
- If you removed any fuel lines, reconnect them securely.
-
Re-pressurize the Fuel System:
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay.
- Turn the key to the "ON" position (without starting) a few times to allow the fuel system to build pressure.
- Check for leaks.
-
Clear the Error Code:
- Use an OBDII scanner to clear the P0180 code and verify if it returns after driving the vehicle.
Additional Tips:
- If you're still experiencing issues after replacing the sensor, check the wiring harness for damage or corrosion.
- Inspect the fuel rail pressure sensor if the new sensor doesnβt resolve the issue, as they work closely together.
