  • I have a 1998 Camry 4 cyl 2.2 liter auto trans. Been getting a check engine light and bank 1 too lean error. Being a 4 cyl it does not use a Mass Air flow sensor. Most people say to start there. I have replaced the rubber air deliver boot to the injection system as it was cracked. Also the crankcase valve ad a couple suspect hoses. Have replaced the fuel filter. Have carefully cleaned the idle control magnetic switch and the throttle body. Will now replace the fuel rail pressure damper and the fuel pump and tank filter. When the car goes into this error mode the car misses and chugs and looses power. If I reset the system when driving the error is corrected and the car runs normally for 10 minutes or up to 2 days. I replaced the engine control module since resetting it solves the problem for a little time. So I have decided the fuel delivery is the likely cause. The pressure damper on the fuel rail is an easy job and the fuel pump and tank strainer looks easy. What I am puzzled by is parts stores also list a fuel pressure regulator. I can't find one. Have looked between the fuel filter to the injector rail. Is this just a part list error or have I missed the regulator. Great car with less than 150k on it. Thanks

  • Thanks, Yes, All the easy things to change done first. I did just solve it. Replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank. By the way if you might be looking for the fuel pressure regulator like I was it is in the tank next to the fuel pump. Again my P0171 error was a weak fuel pump. The low pressure would cause the ECM to trigger the lean error but it could be cancelled until the engine was shut off and restarted. however the engine ran poorly. When driven for a mile or so the error code would come back on. Glad I could share this for others with P0171 errors.
