Code P0119 Lincoln Description

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and the resistance increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance changes the voltage drop across the sensor pins and provides electrical signals to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) corresponding to temperature.
Thermistor-type sensors are considered passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow. The voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor (pull-up resister) in series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.
The ECT Sensor is located in an engine coolant passage and measures the engine coolant temperature. The PCM uses the engine coolant temperature input for fuel control and for cooling fan control. The ECT Sensor can be a threaded or twist lock type.
This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set when the ECT circuit is intermittently open or shorted while the engine is running.

Frequently Asked Questions about P0119 Lincoln Code

What does the OBDII code P0119 mean for a Lincoln vehicle?

Code P0119 indicates an intermittent issue with the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor 1 circuit, which monitors the engine's coolant temperature.

What are common symptoms of code P0119 in a Lincoln?

Symptoms may include poor engine performance, hard starting, fluctuating temperature gauge readings, reduced fuel efficiency, and potentially triggering the check engine light.

What causes the P0119 code to appear?

Common causes include a faulty ECT sensor, corroded or damaged wiring, loose electrical connections, or issues with the vehicle’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

Can I drive my Lincoln with a P0119 code active?

While the vehicle may still be drivable, it’s not recommended. Driving with unresolved ECT sensor issues can lead to poor performance, overheating, or long-term engine damage.

How do I diagnose the P0119 code on my Lincoln?

Diagnosis involves checking the ECT sensor and connector for damage, inspecting wiring for continuity, testing the sensor's resistance, and using a scan tool to monitor live temperature data.

How can I fix the P0119 code on a Lincoln?

Repairs may include replacing the ECT sensor, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or reprogramming/updating the PCM if necessary.

What tools are needed to repair the P0119 code?

A scan tool, multimeter, basic hand tools, and potentially a wiring diagram for your Lincoln are typically needed for diagnosing and repairing this code.

How much does it cost to fix the P0119 code on a Lincoln?

Repair costs can range from $50 to $200 for sensor replacement and labor, but wiring or PCM issues may increase the cost.

Is the P0119 code related to engine overheating?

Yes, if the ECT sensor provides inaccurate or intermittent readings, it could prevent proper monitoring and lead to overheating issues.

Can a failing thermostat cause the P0119 code?

While uncommon, a malfunctioning thermostat could indirectly contribute to the code if it causes erratic coolant temperature fluctuations.
